Everytime it missfires the unburned fuel will be burned in the catalytic converter. Hopefully you can get it tuned up before the cat. conv. is ruined. Plugs, wires, coils etc. While the plugs are out run a compression test . Look at plugs for oil fouling at that age valve stem seals sure could be an issue and feeding oil into the exhaust system fire you have going on.

The misfires and the knock are likely two different problems.
Find the darkest place you can and with the engine at idle, open the hood and look along the ignition wiring for and arcing from the cables. GM uses miserable ignition cables and you may be 'bleeding' high voltage from them.
The knock is even more serious; if it is regular in nature, the knock could be caused by either a rod or main crankshaft bearing with heavy wear. That problem should be diagnosed by a pro in person. If you ignore it, it will likely get worse and then finally fail causing severe engine damage.

Burning oil

Most of the time, when you first start your engine and it smokes, then the smoking slows down after the engine gets hot; this is a sign of valve seals, because the seals get softer when they are hot and re-seal themselves. If your car smokes all the time, hot or cold this is sign of bad oil rings, because of the oil being forced up past the oil rings, into the cylinder.

Engine hot and car miss firing

hi, if your car runs perfect when cold then starts playing up when it gets near to correct running temperature then this would indicate that the oxygen sensor (or lambda sensor as its real name) has failed i say its this due to the fact that the o2 sensor only starts working when your engine is at a certain temp so if this is when your car plays up then this is what i would get replaced.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

  1. Im assuming you have a quad 4 engine.. so remove the cover w 4 bolts and inspect the plastic where the 4 plug boots go for cracks , this was a common problem with these engines, if none are found replace the ignition coil thats defective ..Not likely to be a coil..but you never know I'm more inclined to say hairline cracks in the coil retainer .. ps if the catalytic converter got as hot as you say,, its likely toasted and will fail an emissions test like we have in ontario canada ..good luck,,eh lol

97 z-24 rough idol when cold/runs better when warm

The most common problem is a partially clogged injector. They should be cleaned about once a year. Also the coil housing is known for shorting out between cylinders on your engine. The reason that its worse with the AC on is because the AC compressor is adding a load to the engine. You should probably take it to the shop and have it diagnosed soon before the misfire damages the catalytic converter.
