I had a similar experience a couple of times after filling my gas tank. In my case there was no backfire but an occasion misfire. The car would not rev-up quickly and would sometimes stall when it was first started. Adding a fuel boost/cleaner additive and when the fuel level was at 1/2 tank, filling it up with premium gas (at a different gas station), solved the problem.

BMW cuts out while driving

My Ford did that, but only once. Engine died, backfired and I coasted to the curb. Restarted and ran fine. Sounds like you have a more severe problem. Scary!

Just turns off on it's own, Wait 60 sec. restart press pedel it dies.

This engine is electronically controlled so the first thing that must be done here is to have the systems control computer tested for fault codes and then do the proper diagnostics based on those codes.

Drives fine for about 5 miles then starts to lose power then eventually dies. pull over alongside the road, cycle the key about 6 times, then it drives fine for bout 1 mile and does it all over again

This could be due to a fuel system problem, perhaps a clogged fuel filter. Since any debris in your gas tank would be settled to the bottom for the initial startup, the fuel pump picks up clean gas and has no problem supplying the injectors. As you drive, the circulation of the gas from the tank through the filter could cause the filter to plug up with debris, gradually losing power until fuel pressure is not sufficient to keep the car running. Try replacing the fuel filter and running some fuel injector cleaner through with your next fill-up.

Sounds like a vacuum leak in the motor. Backfiring may be its own problem altogether. Backfiring only occurs when cold air is being introduced into a hot exhaust stream or when the timing is off. Check for vacuum leaks under the hood and leaks in your exhaust. If you have a leak in your exhaust it could be interfearing with your emission sensors and giving your motor false information.
