SOURCE: unstable idle
I had a similar problem, i took it into Nissan, had the codes cleared, drove it till it happened again, got Nissan to tell me the codes and what they mean, the only fault that came up was temperature sensor, the one for the CPU not the Guage. I replaced it $70, that was 2 years ago and the problem hasn't occured again.
My assumption as to why the engine would "hunt" and drop idle was that the CPU would see that the engine was cold (intermittant fault with CPU temperature sensor) and increase the fuel delivery to the engine ((The CPU will do this when the engine is cold, (same as the choke on the old carby engines), allowing the engine to start and run eaiser until the engine reaches operating temperature)) causing it to over fuel and choke sometimes stalling.

do a compression test to make sure the cylinders are in balance.
if the compression is good, change the plugs wires cap and rotor.
also air filter, fuel filter and clean the throttle body inlet with a cleaner.add an additive in the full tank of gas to clean the injectors.
