Hi Alicia,
What you are saying is actually terrible news. The flashing oil light means there is a problem with your oil pressure. It could be just a bad oil pump or possibly a low oil condition as well. The rattling sound you here, combined with the flashing oil light is probably telling you that a rod bearing or two maybe a main bearing has spun which either one of those could cause the blinking oil light as well. My suggestion to you is DON'T DRIVE IT ANY MORE until a mechanic with knowledge of inside engines can look at it. Either way it isn't a cheap problem to fix unless you are married to a mechanic. Sorry for the bad news.

My 2003 Corolla has just recently starting making a thumping noise (from the hood area) that is faster when accelerating.

It is possible that you have a failed engine bearing. Whatever problem the engine light was telling you about has led to something nasty. I'd see a few mechanics for an opinion.

My toyota corolla nze 2002 has a rattling sound in the gear box

SInce any noise from within the engine/gear box cannot be taken lightly, it is important that you will need a good look from a service shop. If you have been carrying out the scheduled service in accordance with Toyota timings, there will not be an issue. You could check out if the noise is external, otherwise get you car to the authorised Toyota centre for an estimate. This will be better than trying out/ stipping and then waiting for spares. I hope my advise is helpful. good day

I have a 2004 toyota corolla. It has a timing chain not a belt. does it need to be changed and at what mileage Regards Dirk

relax -- the nicest thing about a timing chain is that it should last as long as the engine does . . .

2002 corolla (now 91000 miles) makes rattling sound

Thats good that you are getting a second opinion. A Toyota dealer will be able to check it and see what the noise may be. See what they come up with. I dont think a worn timing chain or guides would cause a low oil pressure problem. But, if it does indeed have low oil pressure, that is a serious problem.
