Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

2003 Silverado 4WD. Service 4WD dash light comes on after engaging 4WD and acts up by engaging itself randomly for several days, then goes back to normal.

Dash selector switch has been replaced and the ground wires under driver compartment have been cleaned. Where do I go from here?

Check connection at the 4X4 control module , check power and grounds . Do you know how to do basic electrical testing ? Does your truck have manual or automatic trans mission ? Which transfer case does yours have ?

The NVG 263 transfer case features a three button shift control switch located on the instrument panel. When the ignition is in the RUN position, the transfer case shift control module (TCCM) starts monitoring the transfer case shift control switch to determine if the driver desires a new mode/gear position. At a single press of the transfer case shift control switch, the lamp of the new desired position begins flashing to inform the driver that the TCCM has received the request for a new mode/gear position. The lamp continues to flash until all shifting criteria has been met and the new mode/gear position has been engaged. Once the new mode/gear position is fully active, the switch indicator for the new position remains ON constantly. In the event that the TCCM can not or will not complete the shift, the indicator returns to the previously selected position; this is a Transfer Case Shift Control Switch Indicator Flashes, then Returns to Previous Mode condition.

The NVG 263 transfer case provides the driver with 4 manual mode/gear positions:
• 2HI - 2 Wheel Drive high range
• 4HI - 4 Wheel Drive high range
• 4LO - 4 Wheel Drive low range
• Neutral
Have it check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ?

DTC B0790
DTC B2725
DTC C0306
DTC C0327
DTC C0359
DTC C0379
DTC C0550

Your best bet would be take it to a qualified repair SHOP

Sorry but you have no clue as how this works , you replaced the switch without knowing how it works ! It's a low voltage signal to the control module .
The range/mode switch circuit consists of 4 modes. The transfer case shift control module supplies 5 volts to the switch through the 5 volt reference circuit. The current travel through the resistor of the currently active mode. The current is then returned to the transfer case shift control module through the switch signal circuit.

The transfer case shift control module constantly monitors this signal voltage to determine the condition of the mode switch circuit.

When each of the modes are selected they complete a circuit through their own specific resistor. The transfer case shift control module continuously monitors the switch input to determine whether the Neutral, 2HI, 4HI, or 4LO mode was selected by the driver.

2003 Trailblazer, service 4 wheel drive light on, goes in and out of 4x4, what to do?

Service 4WD light will come for a number of reasons; TCCM is not communicating, TC actuator is not following TCCM command, Front splined disconnect actuator is not engaging.

Chevrolet silverado 2003 5.7l transfer not

Very common. I have the same truck. I replaced the 2-4WD switch on the dash but the problem also was the actuator under the front end. very simple on replacing both parts.

I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado 8 cylinder 4wd extended cab. It has the push button shifter for 4wd. When I try to use 4WD Auto or 4WD Hi, the indicator lights come on but the 4wd does not engage. I read...

Fuse is located at the end of eh dash on drivers side and the Actuator is located at the front differential and on the passenger side.
When in 4wd mode, a switch on top of the transfer case conducts 12 volts out to the actuator. Wire #50 (brown) is the 12v feed, and it conducts to the light blue wire (#900) to the actuator.
When shifted out of 4wd, the switch opens up and no voltage goes to the actuator.

Check voltage at the connector for the front actuator (at the front differential - it looks like a large bullet that threads into the front diff.) If it has 12 volts, the actuator is the problem. If it does not have 12 volts, check the transfer case switch and the power feed to the transfer case.

I'll assume it is the actuator, if the plug to the actuator is getting 12 volts when in 4wd.
The way this actuator works, is it is a sealed chamber that gets heated by voltage. When it heats, the pin in the end swells and pushes a shift fork in the front differential. The shift fork engages a spline on the passenger side of the differential, and boom! you have 4WD.

GM offered an upgrade to this actuator that is a motor instead of a heated device. However, it requires a small harness addition, a spacer, and a new actuator. It is about a $150 to $200 option.

Good luck. The actuator is usually the problem 90% of time but recheck all of the wire harness just to maker sure there is no short before replacing any parts. The actuator may not be fully engaged or disengaged and the fork to the spline may be what is causing the grinding.

PURPOSE: IMPROVE AXLE CONNECT ENGAGEMENT TIME AND

SYMPTOMS: NO FRONT DRIVE AXLE ENGAGEMENT WHEN SHIFTED INTO 4X4.

The Service 4wd light used to go on and off

Drive in circles, one direction then the other and it should come out...Gears get preloaded and will remain so until this load is released...

The engauge/disengauge control does not have power to overcome gear preload.

2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD engaged at high speed

Have a complete service done on your truck. When your fluids are changed, have the technician look for metal particles in them. While some are common, if a lot are present, it may indicate sever wear. I would look for this especially in the engine oil. Though I doubt any damage was done, that was for sure very stressful on your truck. I didn't know that a truck would go that fast in 4low. Also watch the behavior of your transmission and engine. Your transfer case should be shifted a few times too.

Service 4wd

If you had the switch and encoder motor replaced 5 months ago, then you have warranty. You need to return to the dealer and have them pull codes to see if it is the C0327 again. Some of these trucks also had grounding issues for the 4wd module. If it is the same c0327 code stay on them and make them confirm their original diagnosis.
