Question about 1999 Dodge Durango

Open Question

'99 Dodge Durango SLT 4x4. Automatic shifter won't go into reverse. Is this a solenoid problem or a linkage problem?

Problem started when temps dropped. Temps now in 30's and shifter will only go into neutral, not park or reverse. Have to fight it to get it into reverse. Engine light has come on a few times then goes off.

SOURCE: 2000 Dodge Durango will not shift out of 2nd gear

It seems to be stuck in 4x4 still. There could be damaged done to the powertrain by the towing company. Therefore they should be held accountable for the damage and repair that will be needed. You never tow a vehicle in 4x4 it should be carried on a flat-back. Same with AWD vehicles. The towing companies are well aware of this, is their business to know. Make sure to disengage the 4x4, put the 4x4 shifter on the floor in neutral while in park or not moving. If you continue to have problems contact the towing company and hold them accountable for it. See what you can work out with them. If they tell you they are not responsible then contact a lawyer and make them responsible for it.

SOURCE: 99 dodge durango 5.9 with a 46re trany goes in

These transmissions are known for having problems unfortunately. If it drives in first gear thei it sounds like a broke spring in the valve body. If you are not familiar with trans repair this can be a task as there are lots of parts in the valve body. Also could be a bad solenoid on the valve body they have fine screens and get clogged real easy. On these transmissions it is best to change fluid as often as possible as they are tempermental!

Hope this gets you moving forward!

My durango wont go in reverse, no warning just got in and started it went to back out and no response.

It could be a plugged up or burnt out solenoids for reverse in the transmission. Or, it could be a worn out linkage to the transmission.

But, I am leaning towards the solenoid.

To replace it, the transmission needs to be rebuilt at a bench.

Good luck on this repair.
