    I didn't doubt your 87 octane for a second...
That was why I went to the TROUBLE of mentioning it.

    I rest my case...
After you rebuild your engine... I'd recommend following the manufacturer's specs!!

It will last longer before it sounds like nuts rattling in a coffee can.

That is what's known as penny wise!!

    Sorry to hear about it.

Your last comment didn't come thru... but
from the first few words I could see you were restating your question...

Everything from tired spark plugs, poor fuel atomization, bad timing... wires & sensors.

If you are genuinely curious... get your DTC numbers read out of your OBD (diagnostic system).

A well running engine is going to be tight and smooth.

Clattering, knocking... pinging are all signs of an abused & worn engine.

You can only expect that every noise is adverse to longevity & performance.

Each ping is a slap or a hammer blow... each one taking a higher toll.

Lets just hope you are not in a dangerous situation when the INEVITABLE does OCCUR.

Hello Ernie Santacruz,

First best guess is that you are running the
WRONG OCTANE gasoline...

Some folks try to save a few pennies by running a
lower grade than is required...

Your question history is only this question...
No make or model... year...

Can you clarify WHAT your octance recommendation is...

AND

What octane you have actually been using.

A couple of help diagnostic tips there might
help minimize your ENGINE DAMAGE

(I'm just saying)

Couple of clues would seriously help!

SOURCE: Unusual ping noise

I have heard the same thing in my '07 Altima 2.5 S. I asked a mechanic @ the local dealer, and he said he doesn't know what it is and couldn't get the car to make the noise when he drove it.

I had the same problem! I crawled underneath the car and discovered that a heat shield on the exhaust header pipe was corroded and rattling against the exhaust pipe. (Before the muffler)
I removed the portion and clamps and solved the problem. Give it a try.

ok the lifters are making noise, make sure you are using the right oil for your temp zone. also add some lucas oil to your engine oil, it will quiet down the engine.

SOURCE: 2003 Ford Ranger ticking noise, not a ping or

THE ticking noise coming from the engine ..is it just a 1 tick on idle at about each rev of engine,,and does it make any differance to the running of engine ,,Does it get softer when it gets warmer.
As it sounds like a loose tappet and being a oil adjusted tappets this thought of thing does come in now and again. and the best thing to do is to get a small plastic tube 25mm (or 1' ) and 2ft long and put it to your ear and listen at the top of the rocker cover ans see if the noise gets louder in a certen place ,as you will hear it if it is there..
Other wise it could be a Small end on the conrod which the piston is connected to.... lets hope not.
So let me know as soon as poss the answers to all the above. Ron

I have a 425 CI 7 litre Cadillac V8 in a 1979 Diamanté. Once the engine is up to temperature a rattle like noise comes into the engine under acceleration. The noise goes when the throttle is

You need to find where the noise is coming from. On the top could be lifters, valves or low octane gas causing a ping. On the bottom could only one thing. Rod knock. The bearings for the pistons and crankshaft are worn.

Engine knock

caused by hot and lean.
which engine.??? at least 3 choices.
most have knock sensors. and will not knock.
if it really is knock then that is serious.
knock means detonation or ping.
if its just noise say that,
real PING happens under load.
1: check fuses.
2: check knock sensor for outside damage.
3: SCAN the PCM. do you have any DTC errors/
4: do a full 60k tune up. maybe its lean because the fuel filter is clogged.

so you change the knock sensor right. if so, is there any noise coming from engine . the knock sensor tell pcm to retard timing so there is no ping ping in engine advance timing.pcm apply 12 volts to knock sensor when it hear a noise vibrating sensor the voltage will drop down and tell pcm the info.

I have 95 s10 4.3 v6 experiencing a loud knock/ pinging noise. Sounds like it coming from under the intake. Truck runs fine still has good power but still pings when driving. I disconnected each sparkplug...

About the only thing that comes to mind is a cam bearing.
You could have a bearing seized on the cam and turning in the block.
A piston rod or bearing would have changed tone by pulling the plug wires. Valve noise would not have changed but you would usually have a dead cylinder if a valve was stuck.

What causes engine clatter when accelerating? I have the 5.2 v-8 standard shift...

Low oil pressure and worn crankshaft bearings is one and low fuel quality is another (spark knock). You need to clarify the type of noise, is it a knocking sound or more like as pinging noise? There are other reasons but need more information on the nature of a the noise.

I have a 2002 grand marquis,140 thousand miles...i change my oil on the regular,i take good care of the car..my problem is on my last oil change i noticed a slight tapping noise like the valves where...

a knock sensor is basically a resistor and a spring, and what it does is it reduces valve ping. Valve ping is when the fuel is not properly burned and tries to explode before the valve is fully closed and it will make a pinging noise when under load or at higher RPM. If the sensor is bad it can cause detonation, detonation is when the fuel explodes before the valve is closed and can cause a cracked, or exploded piston, bent valves etc. Your problem does not sound like that of a bad knock sensor, predominantly you will only hear the "ping" under load and not at idle and if it was bad your check engine light should be on. this sounds more like a rod knock. change the oil again and use only AMSOIL and an amsoil filter, amsoil is proven to last longer than any other oil, 600,000 miles without a change, or a filter change.
