I have to ask was it both rear wheels spinning or just the one side
was there a front wheel spinning as well
unfortunately with 4 X4 vehicles if any 2 wheels ( 1 front and 1 back) has no traction there is no vehicle movement
many toyota vehicles had a limited slip diff in the rear so if they were spinning together then chances were that one front wheel was also spinning

i was getting fire wood from my usual place a bit hilly always use 2nd gear low range no problem loaded with wood went to back up just spinning had over a ton in the back so should have been plenty of traction never had problem before dont know if both rear were spinning was by myself so i whent forward and pushed over some trees defanetly nothing happining in front diff could it be a bad free weeling hub

if the hubs are automatic action or are activated by vacuum or electric then that is a possibility
if manual action where you have to turn the centre to engage , they can jump out if worn or not fully engaged

How do ii disengage 4 locked 4wd..

Hi Rick:
Depending on the vehicle, there may be externally locking (warn) hubs on the front wheels. These have to be manually dis-engaged at the wheel hubs by rotating a fitting at the center of the hub. Otherwise, there should be a shift lever or switch inside the vehicle that will dis-engage the 4WD

Front hub on landcruiser wont disengage

what are you lamps doing, 4wd/awd lamps.????
working FSM free, no book?
no online account at alldata.com?
in the FSM read the section called.
transfer system and inspection there.
4wd and AWD
transfer shift motor>? checks
NEUTRAL POSITION DETECTION SWITCH
CENTER DIFFERENTIAL LOCK DETECTION SWITCH
if the lamps, show its locked and you have it off
then it is locked,
and the motor failed or the controls to it failed.
the FSM covers all this and is not simple by any means.
i drive jeeps, and mine are all manual.
the fsm has a table for failures.
here is yours?
Does not switch to neutral?
CAN communication system (scan the PCM for errors)
Four wheel drive control ECU
Transfer position switch
Transfer shift actuator
Transfer faulty

there are 6 switches
4wd ECu
and the motor. to make it happen.
SCAN it.

What is auto 4 wheel drive?

Auto 4 wd is when the Silverado's PCM takes readings from the front and rear driver shaft and when there is any detection that the speeds are different. The Auto 4WD will activate the transfer case to lock it self to 4wd until the front and rear drive shaft are running at the same given speed of rotation.

Thank you for using fixya

Front drive shaft not fully engaged in 4WD, with truck on stands all 4 wheels do rotate but if i stop front wheels the front drive shaft is not engaged

Hi,
Do you have auto locking hubs on the front wheels, or manual locking hubs?
If you have auto locking hubs chances are they are not engaging properly and will need to be removed and spline sets checked for broken teeth on locking hub and locking shaft.
If you have manual locking hubs then check that they are firm when turning to engage them in the lock position. If they are light when engaging them to the lock position then they my have broken/worn out the locking hub and spline. Also check that the engaging spring inside the hub has enough tension to engage the hubs they may be broken. If the hub are all ok then you have a problem in the transfer box, where the 4WD lever is not meshing the transfer box properly. Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.

I have a 2000 4wd tacoma with manual locking hubs and the 4wd does not seem to be engaging after locking the hubs and shifting the lever into 4 hi or 4 low

Sounds like one of your hubs is sticking and not engaging. You can check them by engaging the hubs and the transfer case and jacking up each front wheel independently if it doesn't spin your good, if it does you found your problem. As far as fixing a hub goes, it may be just dry and need some grease, or there are some very good aftermarket hubs available from Warn.
Hope this helps

95 dodge 2500 4x4 front axle clicks in 2wd not 4wd when engaged

Do you have automatic locking hubs? Do you need to turn hubs on wheels in order to have 4 wheel drive work? If all you do to get in 4wd is move shifter, then you have automatic locking hubs. The clicking indicates that the hubs are not fully disingaging. To check, block rear wheels, jack front up, and turn tire. the axle should not be turning...if it is, hub is still ingaged....time for new hubs.....if hubs are bad, and you want to save money, you can purchase a set of manual hubs made by (WARN)...its more than half the cost, but you will have to turn hubs to lock and unlock manually. Note...you still need to use the gear selector to put and take out 4wd.

2004 Ford F-150 extended cab FX4. 4WD problem

Your front hubs are automatic locking hubs, and the gears are hard nylon. These hubs break very easily, therefore causing you to lose your front wheel drive in 4 high, or 4 low. If you replace the hubs with "WARN (name brand) " manual locking hubs, you will never have the issue again. Of course, you will have to get out of the truck and manually lock the hubs, but they are metal gears, and much more durable. I've personally seen the issue several times, and changing the hubs has resolved the issue every time.

i believe this is normal as when wheel leaves ground all power goes to the wheel that is not touching ground as when in 4wd not all four wheel turn unless you have frunt and rear air lockers if this is not the case then try 4wd hub probaly not locking in good luck
