The starter is on the left side, underneath the engine.removal of the large plastic splash guard is required to gain access. The starter has 2 mounting points,1 nut and 1 bolt. Disconnect battery, unbolt starter and lower it to gain access to power cables. Hope this helps.

Replacing Selenoid on a 2006 Kia Sportage. Can it be done by a novice? How difficult is it and if it cannot be done how much would it cost?

yes, you can do it. Make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable first, as you'll be working with big wires that will spark if shorted. lemme know if you have questions. Here are instructions from autozone.com:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the starter assembly from the vehicle.
  3. Remove the nut from the solenoid M-terminal.
  4. Remove the solenoid retaining screws and the magnetic switch.

To install:
  1. Install the magnetic switch and secure to the drive housing with the two screws.
  2. Re-install the nut onto solenoid M-terminal.
  3. Reinstall the starter assembly.
  4. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
