The power steering fluid emptied in a matter of seconds, I am now trying to access the power steering assembly but find I have to dismantle the front end to get to it. There must be an easier way to access it

SOURCE: Suddenly leaking power steering fluid, reservoir empty

The best bet is its trans oil. The gearbox has crushable washers/gaskets, the bolts may just need to be tightened slightly to crush the gasket and seal.

SOURCE: power steering fluid leaking.

With the engine switched off. Go under the car and clean of all the fluid you find. Now start the car and turn the steering wheel from full lock to full lock. Switch off the engine and go under the car and you should see the area of the fluid leek. With this information you can then decide how to tackle the repair.

SOURCE: Windshield washers not working

I wouldn't worry about tracing the hose just yet, most likely it's a bad pump. Find the wire(s) going to the pump, usually on the bottom of the reservoir and connect a test light to a good ground. Then have someone try to 'squirt' the washer fluid while you touch the test light 'probe' to the pump's wire connector. If it lights but no fluid squirts, it's bad. They are cheap and usually very easy to replace. If it doesn't light there's a brake in the circuit somewhere. (bad fuse, bad connector, etc.) Good luck.

SOURCE: steering makes a whining noise - where is the fluid reservoir?

the suspect part for a power steering whine is the power steering pump, flush (very important) the system and replace the PS pump..

My 1991 subaru 2.5 legacy boxer sounds like the power steering is out of oil when you start car in th mornings, but ok once car has been run ,

Your Pump is getting worn, as it expands the noise goes away. You can try and Empty the Power Steering Pump of its fluid and put new in and there is a chance it will go away but if it does not, you are looking at replacing the Pump.

Preventive Maintenance goes a long way, the same thing with the brakes, Engine, Transmission, ect.. They all require changing the fluid to prolong the life of the components.

You will have to look where it is leaking from and get it fixed. Running without power steering fluid will eventually burn you power steering pump out and yes if you power steering is that hard to turn when out of fliud, it is dangerous.

power steering pump is low on fluid or empty .
no fluid will burn up the pump and will lock up.
check fan belt.

problem may not be the pump make sure that the power steering lines are not where the fluid is leaking add fluid and observe where the fluid is coming from easier to change out a line than pump and no on bypasing the system

My power steering pump makes a growling noise even when the car is idle. The noise is louder when I turn the steering wheel. The power steering fluid has gotten low a couple of times and gets foamy.

if gets low definitely a leak foam is pump mixing fluid with air roar is pump cavitation check lines or pump for leak keep fluid at recommended level air bound unit can cause steering difficulty and or failure if need have trained mech look into problem
