I have 1998 vw cabrio just did a tune up runs great in idle put in drive car dies at 20mph can get car to 45 mph but very slowly why?

sounds like either the spark plugs weren't gapped right or the wires are in the wrong locations.
Google search the firing order and check the wires/loactions first, then if they are correct, have a look at the spark plug gaps.

check for plugged exhaust system, dirty air filter, vacuum leaks, those have a mile of vacuum hoses. Also, check for bad fuel pump.

Your TCC soleniod may be sticking or bad. The Torque Converter Clutch may be staying engaged when you come to a stop this very evident if you drive over 35 mph and you have this problem and it will only occur when the vehicle is warm. this may!! be your problem if you meet the above criteria.

It sounds like you might have a clogged catalatic converter on the exhaust system.
