When i started my malibu this morning, something was squeeling underneath the hood. When it warmed up, the squeeling subsided. Not my belt. I just changed some of my power steering fluid the other day....


If the rack is tight, you may hear the pump making
a loader sound,as fluid may be somewhat restricted,
as you put more wheel into it, and the rack is slow to respond

I would flush all the fluid and add some LubeGard additive,
that you can get at auto parts store

I have a 2001 Sonata. I have a squeeling pulley.


It sounds like you have a worn or streched belt making the sqeeling noise. Whenever you turn on a
device in the car that draws a fair amount of voltage
ie. a/c or headlights it will cause increased drag on
the alternator and if you have a loose/worn or glazed
belt, it can slip around the pully making the squeel.
To adjust the alt-a/c belt loosen the mounting bolts
on the tensioner, then use the adjuster bolt behind
the tensioner pully to loosen and tighten the belt.
Be sure to check the belt for cracks bald spots etc.
While the belt is loose spin the pullys to make sure
they all spin freely. Also I would replace the belt just
to be sure. Hope this helps

How do you replace the belt


Not sure about your particular vehicle. Best is to get a book from autozone. But there should be a tensioner pulley somewhere on there. You put a ratchet or wrench on it and turn counter clockwise to release the tension on the belt to remove/replace it. It is usually black and roughly 2 to 3 inches in diameter. No teeth or grooves. It's a smooth surface pulley.

do not use the tensioner. it has tendency to break a they require a little more time to change. take the belt and use your muscle to get it over the pulleys. make sure you can read the writing on the belt (as you would be holding a book). if its upside down, you stand the possibilty of it squeeling. when you get the belt over the pulley. gently tighten the adjuster until there is just enough tension on the belt that it will not jump excessively and squeel. be careful

How do i tighten the belt on the engine


there is no way of manually tightening the belt. if the belt is loose you need to look at the tensioner and see if it is sitting at an angle. if it is, it needs to be replaced. this item is on the more left side of the engine as you are looking at it and will be about 6-7" long with a 3/8" hole near the end so you can use a ratchet pull away from the belt. if its squeeling youre hearing first check for glaze and cracking. next check for writing on the belt and you should be able to read it like holding a book. if it is upside down to you, take it off and turn it around. this definately works.

Is your compressor still working, it may have seized up and the belt was the squeel you heard.

The squealing belts could be either too loose or too tight, because the power is also an issue it could be that the alternator is failing and it's bearings are causing the belt to wobble and make a noise.
If there isn't enough power at idle to keep the battery charged up and when you turn the radio on more power is being used causing the engine to stop.
The solution is to get a multi-meter and check the voltage on the battery terminals before starting the engine, should be around 12 volts. then again when the engine is running, should be around 13.8 volts, if it's not the alternator isn't charging the battery and will need to be changed. Hope this helps.

Squeeling when the car starts.


Your belts need replaced. Its the belt slipping that causes the squeel. Sometimes the idle pulley or belt tensioner will make the same noise if wore.
