The most likely problem is a faulty master cylinder or if your ABS light came on, a wheel speed sensor problem . Did you do any work on the brakes recenntly? if so check front sensors. If brakes are old the caliper pins could be worn and binding....this really should be checked by a pro with VAG Com scan tool.
