Find another mechanic. Lean codes. Could be vacuum leaks(lines or plenum) or exhaust leaks near the O2 sensors.

well, I am not a jeep guy, I am a woman who knows some things about vehicles, but not mechanically inclined. I had an 1988 jeep before and I am aware of the sensors and when it is not right ...for sure. This vehicle, even though it is 20 years old was running pretty good. I am looking for the best advice that I can relate to a mechanic. Thanks so much to all of you :)

find a new mechanic, try a ASE man.
or woman, ASE shops are everywhere
it's not brand shop name, ASE is training,
we can NOT TRAIN your mechanic through you
it's NOT EVER going to happen.
he's baffled due to NO TRAINING.
    this is fact.
    so... deal with that. move.
my guess is engine misfires badly.
and he is clueless as to why,...
all cars ran good yesterday, there is no points there, but its a daily driver.
not car found in a barn, that is good to know.
    not bad fuel.

Find a real shop
with the ASE sign on the wall.
win.
your car is not magic, nor has it some odd french parts like back in 1988. (horrors then)
it's super normal car with MPI EFI engine.
no magic here at all.
and fully documented. if he can read.
your car has
misfire
and poor combustion
the ASE guy does basics first. (IS ENGINE GOOD TOPS THAT LIST A BATTERY OF TESTS.. USING TOOLS)
theN HEe-SHE works up to more complex details of EFI.
We have a list of 50 reason for misfire.
nobody in there right might guesses 50 times.
well they do here, but that par for GUESSyah forum.

Hell, I'm not even a mechanic.I'm that Poor SOB that gets the car after everybody else gives up on.

I have a question for you. A Jeep. 2003, 3.7. I've been threw everything timing, wiring, sensors, and computers. I can not get the coils to fire. I have power, but the ECM won't ground/fire the coils. Everything else working per scanner. Any suggestions?

USA. Six coil packs(COP). V6. Guess I should have said Jeep liberty. I bought alldata and have Mitchel and Identifix at work. I did misstate the year. It's an 02. K engine code. 1J4GL48K92W2920173x

No response??? Come on. Don't make me think your one of those people that copy and paste (because you have access to FSM's) or say to google this.

Yes, all six won't fire, all have power. ASD stays on. I can read the crank around 200 rpm's. I have power at both sensors, I checked timing, it was dead on, I check the reluctor wheel on the cam to make it wasn't loose/broken. I did have a TPS code, swapped it, gone. Per scanner everything works. If I unplug a sensor, it will pop a code. I have replaced the PCM remanned. I even tried my neighbors PCM, all three do the same thing. I even pulled the wiring harness, stripped and went threw it wire by wire. Every one ohmed out 1 ohm or less. I know other computers can cause havoc threw data lines, but not like this. Usually will kill them all or not let you read any of them. This one has got the best of me. I ohmed out the fuse panel also. Checked it for cross feeds.

    did you fix this randy?
    were the cams timed right.?
    and no chain slop>?

  • Anonymous Jan 18, 2017

    the other ecu failed too
well that tells you bad engine, bad sensors
    my guess loose chain,
or intermittent sensors. (means wire to them too)

Yes the alternator is the first thing I would test. It could also be a problem between the alternator and the battery.

What are the symptoms of a speed sensor going bad on a 1997 jeep grand cherokee laredo 6 cyl.

Since alot of things rely on data from the speed sensor you will "usually" get an ABS alarm, little or no shifting,no indication of speed on the speedometer, and the check engine light. without the abs light and with a speed indicated I would lean toward a transmission problem

I have a 1997 jeep grand cherokee limited edition and all of a sudden the check engine light is on and when ever i stop its like im not gettin any gas and then i get to much acceleration an sometimes it...

Whenever a check engine light comes on it is a sensor sending a trouble code to the cars computer. You need to take it in to a mechanic and have them hook a scanner to the comnputer to pull the code and then they can tell you what the problem is.
Good Luck!

Check your throtle postition sensor. It monitors what postion the throtle is at and sends that info to the ecm. It will go bad and cause that problem.
