My Chevy truck did this when the knock sensor wire melted and shorted to the starter.

Have the codes read. 97 is odbII. Good thing is that it is a 97. If you can find one at a junk yard, programming isn't necessary. Has to be the same engine and transmission though.

97 ford f350 overdrive light on steady wont shift out

Could be a torque converter clutch solenoid and/or electronic pressure control. Both are in the transmission. #3 is the TCC # 4 is the EPC. Pull the pan off and you will see them. If there is a bunch of debris in the pan, your probably due for a rebuild.

97 ford Taurus runs ruff backfires

I would suggest you start with the basics. Check your wiring on your spark plugs to ensure they are in the right order. If you can grab an OBD scanner, I'd start with it as well. It can reveal many mysteries. Your running rough usually sounds like a timing issue. If there are over 100,000 miles on the vehicle, the timimg belt will be suspect.
Best of wishes.

I have a 97 E350. The O/D light sometimes flashes and then it shifts very hard. 7.3 diesel

You need to find out what code it is setting and then it will most likely be a sensor that needs replacing

I have a 97 f350 with overdrive problem

I had the same thing happen to my 97 f350 7.3. It then started to slip badly. Took it to the dealership. I had to put in a new tranny. They also said that if you tow or drive steep terrain then it would be a really good idea to get a bigger inter cooler for the tranny. The whole thing started because it got over heated. Hope this helps a little
