Knocking (Pinging) noise heard when car is in drive

2001 Mazda Protege 1.6L Automatic
Only heard in drive and reverse, is a knocking (pinging, slapping) noise is hear when RPM's are at about 2,000 and fade at about 3,500. I've checked and changed timing belt, rod clearance is good, and flywheel isn't cracked. Engine sounds perfect in park and neutral. Drop it into drive it loses motor strength and sputters a little and sometimes hesitates, then press on the gas and that slapping noise is heard. With a stethescope its heard in the lower front of motor. Compression test indicates low in 2 at 80 something and 56 on 3. Please help it is driving me crazy.

What gas does a 1992 Mazda use?

would depend on the model

If you don't hear knocking (pinging or grinding combustion) from the engine when you jump on the accelerator you can just use regular gas. If you do hear those noises then you need to move up to a higher octane (slower burning) fuel.

Engine knocking

Knocking or pinging? If knocking just sell it unless you love the car truck. If pinging check timing.

2001 Mazda Protege 1.6L automatic. Knocking pinging noise

Solution 1 would be to diagnose the problem of the low comp in 2& 3 and solve that issue. I would of started w the timing belt 1st. If that didn't solve it,ck head gasket, valves, rings. CK for oil & coolant mixing. Good Luck

I think you have run the oil down low or have had a blockage in the oil gallery to the crankshaft.Resulting in the bottom end bearings wearing out.Drain the oil and check for metal particals.good luck!!

Knocking and pinging noise

You might have a blown head gasket. The milky oil is an indication of water getting into it, which would point toward your head gasket. You should have a compression test done.

90 Toyota 4Runner pinging noise

hi the pinging you here is ignition firing before it should but if you have a knocking noise i would suspect the worse but try doing a compression test first see if everything is in order then if this seems ok have you put fuel in it just before it started if so change your fuel if not see if the electrical system has a knock sensor if so run the engine and tap the block close to it see if engine revs drop if not replace but the knock is a piston best of luck yates210456
