If the temp gauge is at normal, then what makes you think it is overheating? Are you experiencing water being forced out of the cooling under pressure? That is what makes some think the car is overheating. White smoke from the pipe can be normal, but only for a short time after start-up. If you smell the exhaust and can smell an anti-freeze odor in it, then you probably have a blown head gasket, cracked head, or cracked block. This can cause over-pressurization of the cooling system and coolant overflow. Usually, overheating accompanies this issue and is normally the original cause of it as well.

Bad head gasket or possibly a crack in the block that is allowing coolant to enter the combustion chamber.

run the fault codes as it may be an indication that the cat converter is running at an excessive temperature due to incorrect air/fuel mixture settings from the ECM

I am assuming you are referring to an exhaust manifold crack. There could be a number of reasons. It could simply have cracked from age, having heated and cooled thousands of times in its life. Or it may have been struck inadvertently. More sinister problems could be a blocked catalytic converter causing back pressure and excessive heat. If the engine has been running a little rough lately, a burnt exhaust valve can cause excess fuel to be burned in the manifold, resulting in overheating and cracking.

I replaced the heater hoses and now there is water coming out of the exhaust pipe

A minor amount of moisture collects in exhaust pipe on a normal basis. Larger amounts indicate a possible blown head gasket. Check oil dipstick for possible water/antifreeze in oil. Had vehicle overheated or hose blown to require replacement? [excessive temperature might lead to head gasket's demise.]

Codes don't have a certain location, a code means a problem has occurred in a system of the electronics of the cars fuel control or emission control system.
P1401 NISSAN - EGR Temperature SensorPossible causes- EGR Temperature Sensor harness is open or shorted
- EGR Temperature Sensor circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty EGR Temperature Sensor
- Malfunction of EGR function, EGRC-BPT valve or EGRC-solenoid valve
- Blocked EGR passages When is the code detected?An excessively low voltage from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensor is sent to Engine Control Module (ECM) even when engine coolant temperature is low, or an excessively high voltage from the EGR temperature sensor is sent to ECM even when engine coolant temperature is high.
P1401 NISSAN Description The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensor detects temperature changes in the EGR passage way. When the EGR valve opens, hot exhaust gases flow, and the temperature in the passage way changes. The EGR temperature sensor is a thermistor that modifies a voltage signal sent from the Engine Control Module (ECM). This modified signal then returns to the ECM as an input signal. As the temperature increases, EGR temperature sensor resistance decreases.
This sensor is not used to control the engine system. It is used only for the on board diagnosis

Check for a vac leak. Check all small vac lines, Benz is noted for plastic lines that crack. Look closely around air filter and work your way out from there. Also run a bottle of STP gas treatment through it. This time of year with big temperature swings, condensation (water) forms in fuel tank and that wreaks havoc with Benz induction.

Sounds like the catalytic converter or muffler are clogged. There isn't much exhaust at idle, but when you accelerate your exhaust volume increases, thus if your catalytic converter or muffler are clogged the restrict the exhaust escaping out thus causing an excess of back pressure which won't allow the engine to breathe normally.
