If you are then maybe a inhibitor switch problem.

it probably did the gear selector has a cable attached to it that runs down to transmission --the cable can become disconnected [plastic clips]due to age wear or damaged by debris look under vehicle and check cable and connector also check the connection at the column

Ignition switch key lock solenoid passat

when you shut it off were the wheels cranked sideways-sometimes this puts pressure on the locking system and won't let it disengage-try moving the steering wheel back and forth while applying pressure to the key-I hope this helps-cheers Denny

Floppy stick shifter, car stuck in gear

I am sure that there are parts that are worn out in the shifter, I see this complaint a lot for Old Saturns. It will be a miracle is you can get the parts to fix the worn out bushing and such

There is most likely too much play in the shifter linkage. Block the wheels on the truck and crawl under and watch the linkage as someone moves it back and forth from park to low. There is probably a lot of play in it and you will have to get that out. I'm not as familiar with that body style as I am with the pre 88 but it is similar. There should be a threaded part on it to make adjustments. Only turn it a couple of turns and then check it. If this won't fix it then you will probably have to get inventive and make some bushings and spacers. Seems to me that the last time I went to the dealer looking to fix sloppy linkage, my wallet got scared. I used copper pipe to make bushings and washers to take the side play out of joints. Hope this helps.

The key is stuck in the ignition and will not start the motor.

Make sure it is in park ...Other than that you will have to change ignition.....You can try moving steering wheel back and forth while moving shifter toward park position...(Wiggle both at same time)
Sometimes this will help if slightly worn......Also never have a lot of keys on ignition key...This will cause the problem you are having because of excess weight pulling on the ignition at all times..
Make sure you have correct key in ignition first...............................Metalpoet

Did you pull ******* the steering wheel on the direction that it is locked? Usually rare... But I have seen the springs go bad with the tumblers in the key cylinder. You could attempt to thump under the key cylinder to attempt to bounce the tumblers while moving the key back and forth.

The ignition key will not come out.

If its not turned all the way to the off position try moving the key around while you turn the wheel back and forth, there is a lock mechanism in the steering wheel to prevent stealing the car without the key. Also make sure the shifter is in park, if the steering wheel doesnt work put some pressure on the shifter towards park and move the key around.

Cannot turn key in ignition in 2008 cobalt. Attempted to find a release mechanism under steering column as I did with 2005 cobalt but the 2 or 3 things I could move did not release the ignition.

try moving the shifter back and forth from park to 1 then back to park, there is an issue with the shifter not releasing the park lock mechanism that goes into the ignition cylinder.
