This is usually caused by a sheared pin on the synchro gear in the transmission, but can also be caused by a shifter linkage problem. You may need to drop the transmission oil pan to see what's going on, and repair as needed.

pull the shifter out of the top of the transmission and try to move the shift rails to nuetral, if thy won't move u must have an internal broken part jamming the shift trails.

SOURCE: my car the gears got stuck and so i took the

first i assuming where talking about a manual transmission
check the shifter and shifter linkage i would assume it in the shifter it self or who ever did rebuild didnt fix it right
all so assuming when u had transmission repaired u all so replaced (or at least checked) the clutch
if clutch was not replaced when transmission was replaced it should have been unless clutch was just recently replaced

SOURCE: i have a 2000 pontiac firebird manual transmission,,, shifter is stuck to only shift from 3rd to 4th gear, can't move over to shift into first or second gear.

Does that transmission have external shift linkage? Sounds like a linkage broke or the neutral gate is way off.

The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems ca cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms

code p 0734 refers to gear 4--incorrect ratio===causes --wiring---TR sensor/ switch---shift solenoids---transmission mechanical fault
I would check the operation of the transmission ration sensor/switch first as that is the most likely place that the fault is
check engine lights are not solely for the engine but report on transmission problems as well
a transmission mechanical fault is the absolute last that you should consider because the transmission will revert to normal operations until it selects gear 4 which indicates sensor or solenoid problem

Wow.. I'm a little confused.. is the shift indicator stuck in 4th or is the truck stuck in 4th gear? the neutral safety switch can cause some of them symptoms,but it sounds like you have some bigger problems.. transmission, transfer case or wiring. If you want to clarify those symptoms i might be able to be a better help.

Shifter is stuck in 4th gear and wont come out. I was having problems getting in some gears at first and then it was getting stuck in 4th but would come out, now it stuck and wont come out.


Will it come out of gear with the engine shut off? When you were having trouble getting it into gear was it with the engine running? If you answered yes to either, or both questions then you likely have a clutch problem; faulty clutch assembly or slave and/or master cylinder. If the problem occured with the engine off then you have internal transmission trouble.
