Would recommend that you first get the codes out of the ECM and then post in here. You can also google your codes and it will give you many options that can assist you in troubleshooting and repairs to correct this issue.

I own a 2001 VW Passat Wagon.3.0 liter, 6 cyl., 30 valve engine. The 'check engine' light and 'emissions workshop' messages came on and I need to know what the problem could be.

most autoparts stores will run the check engine light for you for free....I am assuming that you either have a clogged catalytic converter, or your o2 sensor is throwing a fault....have autozone check it out and post back.

I have a 1.8 petrol engine vw passat year 2000 and recently it started losing power intermittently but now its almost constant. it dies a death on any incline and even on flat ground it will suddenly...

My old 1992 passat done this when the catalytic converter was faulty but have you tried cleaning the throttle throat, just remove the fat black hose and manualy holding the throat open wipe it clean with a cotton cloth with wd40 applied as oil dries in there causing a residue build up.On idle no fault codes will show with a catalytic converter and mine passed a mot.

Warning lamp flashing warning lamp shaped like a coiled spring started flashing. causing car to stutter badly. light went out when i restarted car.

Hi, that symbol is the MIL (engine check light) on the diesel cars. You probably have an intermittant fault, if you find someone with an EOBD code reader - which most garages have. They will be able to read the fault code which will have been stored relating to your fault.
Hope that helps Matt...
P.S If the fault relates to the EGR valve speak with your VW retailer as the car may need a (free I think) software update.

1996 VW Jetta has an engine code of P1586 Engine

P0422 - Catalyst below threshold.

Catalytic converter is clogged or out of medium.

Replace it.

ACTUAL DIAGNOSTIC:

Fault Code Definition
Code P0422 indicates that the Bank 1 Main Catalytic Converter's emissions efficiency has fallen below the minimum allowable limit. This threshold is tracked by a Catalyst Monitoring Oxygen Sensor located on or near the outlet of the Catalytic Converter.

Symptoms

* Check Engine Light will illuminate
* In many cases, no abnormal symptoms may be noticed

Common Problems That Trigger the P0422 Code

* Defective Catalytic Converter
* Engine misfires have damaged the Catalytic Converter
* Internal engine damage resulting in high oil consumption and/or a leaking Head gasket has damaged the Catalytic Converter

Common Misdiagnoses

* Oxygen Sensors are replaced when the real problem is a damaged Catalyst
* Catalyst is replaced when the real problem is internal engine damage, which is producing elevated emissions levels
* Catalyst is replaced when a misfiring engine is the real problem

VW P421 code

This is a common problem with V6 Passats. VW put out a TSB on this a few years ago.
The code is telling you that your catalytic converter (driver's side, I think) is bad. It's more than likely not bad.

VW put out a TSB on this a few years ago. TSB 05-13. The cause of the error code is basically an over sensitive ECU (computer of car/engine) and the fix is to have your ECU flashed with the latest and greatest software. Depending on your mileage they might do it under warranty - you'll have to check.

It's still possible that it might be a bad catalytic converter - and the dealership might try to tell you that either way. Call VW (1-800-822-8987) and ask them about the TSB (I couldn't find it online).

Tell the dealership you want the ECU flashed - it's much much cheaper than a cat. No sense replacing it if it's not bad
There is a federal warranty on catalytic converters - 8 yrs or 80k miles...

Hope this helps!

If the clutch goes will there be a need for a fly wheel?

The only information I have on the 1997 to 2005 Passat is; expect problems with suspension, axles and electrics. Gearbox failures are possible. Catalytic converter fault also.

Underperforming catalist

readings taken downstream (exhaust) with the O2 sensor are telling your computer that the catalytic converter is not doing its job well enough (it is reading too high an exhaust content of carbon monoxide or hydrocarbons) the solution is to replace the catalytic converter assuming the engine and its other management systems are performing healthy ....good luck
