The clockwork zswitch is not turning the clockwork on

Unfortuneatly this model has a bad habit of this, When these are not serviced every 30k like clockwork the end result is this. Trans needs rebuilt, Sounds like the pump went out

Sounds like it could be the control module. Do you get spark when you try to start it back up, before it cools off? Some parts stores can test the control module.

I also have a -99 Forester S turbo with the same problem. Runs like clockwork between failiures but all of a sudden engine turns but will not start. The workshop recomended fuelfilter replacement but I thaught it could have something to do with the immobilizer. what have you tried and ruled out?

The alternator is bad. Your accessories like that are driven mostly on alternator power, and as soon as it goes out, everything goes haywire. You should pull the alternator off, and have it tested at your autozone, and when they tell you it's bad, then you can go ahead and get the new or remanufactured one to replace it with. The alternators on these vehicles usually go out around 60-70000 miles almost like clockwork, so if it's original, I would definitely expect it.

Sometimes when a starter is starting to go bad they will do this.  As they heat up they won't spin fast enough to get the car started.  Take it to an auto parts store and have them test it several times to recreate it being hot and they should be able to let you know if it is good or not.  Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.  Thanks for an honest rating and for using FixYa!

It sounds like your mechanic is right, to me it sounds like its just a dirty old starter having trouble making contact and turning... thats all. Once you replace it with a new starter that has a clean armature and new solenoid, it should start like clockwork!

it is called a clockwork wire it is in your steering wheel under the airbag they go out on fords alot
