I see ya having issues, a real bright flashlight is a great tool to have. I got one of these a few months back and it works great cost about $10 3 Watt LED Rechargeable Cordless Spotlight
You need to be able to see everything, and make sure you don't miss a bolt, you don't want to break the motor or the bellhousing. proper transmission support must be used also, if not this will cause the guide pins to stick.
hope this helps, get back to me with your results.

Transmission leaking from top of transmission.

It is the vent valve. Two things cause this to leak overfilling the transmission, make sure it is within the safe zone with fluid very hot to the touch, never check cold. The next is overheating the transmission from heavy loading or internal failure in the transmission like slipping clutch packs or defective torques converter.

Will a dirty transmission filter cause leakage from the top of the transmission? Back pressure?

There is several things that will cause the fluid to come out the vent on the transmission. The transmission has been over filled or you may have water to get in the transmission. Look at the fluid and if it's not a deep red then you havepossible water deluteing the fluid. The water would come from the radiator and get inside causing it to over fill. The best thing to do is drain the fluid and change the filter and inspect the transmission. If you find out that water has got into the radiator, then by no means have the radiator transmission cooler checked for a crack or broken connection. Hope this will help you.

Most likely your speed sensors are bad, this causes the transmission to seem like its "stuck" in second gear or in "limp" mode. I can also be your TCM (transmission control module). But from your description, it's most likely the speed sensors located on the top of the transmission. Make sure you replace them with an exact replacement are they are not interchangeable.
Hope this helps.
