I replaced batteries on my thermostat and had some smoke, quickly took them out and put back in and all is well!

Should I be concerned? What could cause this?

Once you let the smoke out it does not go back in.

my guess is a blown head gasket. I would do a compression test on all cylinders to be sure. these engines wont stand much high temperature running before blowing the head gasket. you can rent a compression tester from your local autoparts store usually for free.

You have a short circuit somewhere and this is likely what drained your battery. Could be a bad alternator, wire rubbed through insulation, or other short. Get someone to look under hood while you try to crank it and see if they can tell where smoke is coming from. As an old professor once told me "All electrical circuits run on smoke. Be careful not to let it get out!" lol.

When i put on the gas my car smokes ,what is the cause and how do i fix it?

The smoke is blow by. Oil is getting by the valve seal, rings or pcv and burning in the intake with the gas. You may need new rings or valve seals. There is a cheap fix to it. go to the parts store and ask for smoke be gone or anything like that

You'll only see good circulation when it's at operating temperature & hot enough for thermostat to open, allowing coolant to flow through the system. Hope you had heater on (not defrost) while you were letting it run/circulate. I usually wait for rad fan to come on 2 or 3 times, before I put cap back on. Rad fan comes on to cool what just came out of engine when thermostat opened, so when you see good flow, you'll probably see fan come on shortly after.
