If the spark plugs are the right ones (the right heat range) then the engine has either worn or broken oil rings on the pistons, or worn oil seals on the valve guides.

Given your comment about the power, I think it is the former. A compression test will tell you more. Then, pour a tablespoon of engine oil in each cylinder and repeat the compression test. If that raises the readings the rings need replacement. If not, it is more likely to be the valve guide seals leaking, and the valve seats may need regrinding as well.

Number 1 if yes then engine is lacking power due to piston rings worn answer rebuild engine.
Number2 spark plugs brown [good] if black soot as num1.

How to change spark pluigs on 1997 mercury mountaineer

A Simple 5/8 deep socket( get a spark plug socket they work nicer) and get some extensions and a ratchet and some swivels. I like to use 3/8 size tools. Once in a while a 1/2 tools may be nice if a plug is not coming out. Next soak the plugs in the engine with some penetrating oil if they are giving you a hard time. dont use alot, just 2 seconds of spraying. Allow engine to cool off to air temp. This will allow thing to not burn you or for you to damage the soft threads in the aluminum head.

Changing plugs have not changed much on these vehicles than vehicles in the past. Just remove the spark plug boots carefully. Now you can remove each spark plug. Use the extensions and swivels in many combinations if one is not working easy enough. Always make sure you know what gap these plugs need to be and set them. Always use an Anti-seize lubricant on the threads of the spark plugs. This will prevent them from under torquing and getting stuck in the future. Put preferably new spark plug wires back on and use Dielectric grease to prevent the boots from sticking to the spark plugs and from moisture getting in between them.

The first 30 seconds or so of running may be rough if you decide to use penetrating oil to loosen the spark plugs. This is why you should us as little as needed. More oil makes for longer crap running time. Just let the engine idle on its own and clear it out on its own. Dont rev the engine or force anything until it warms up to normal operating temps. Cold engines and revving is not good for internal parts.

Good luck :)

Child poured 2q of oil in my carburetor while i was away, how do i clean it out? 1983 z28 camaro. V6

Remove all spark plugs and plug wires. Crank engine for 30 seconds (oil will exit engine from spark plug holes, this will be messy). Replace plugs and wires. Start with some starting fluid and run OUSTSIDE for about 20 mins. Exhaust will smoke for up to 20 minutes.

78 corvette that has not been started in 3

1.) put aside about $50 that you are ging to spend... period
2.) drain the oil and remove the old oil filter
3.) install a new oil filter, add new 30W oil
4.) remove all 8 spark plug wire from the 8 spark plugs
5.) remove the 8 spark plugs
6.) spray about 5 seconds of WD40 into each of 8 spark plug holes
7.) spray the remainder of the can into each of the 2 valve covers thru the EGR holes (pull out the EGR valve first)
8.) making certain that you have a full battery charge, turn the starter switch to START for about 5 seconds... if your engine turns then your internals are not frozen... that's good
9.) open another can of WD40 and spray equal amounts into ecah of 8 spark plug holes a second time
10.) turn the start switch on for another 5 seconds and listen for strange sounds... by the way without the spark plugs the engine will rotate more quickly than you normally expect... not a problem because as it turns it is lubricating your internal parts
11.) wait a minute and then turn it on for for about 10-20 seconds while listening for scraping or knocking sounds... if none heard then you are all lubed up and ready to reinstall the spark plugs.
Install new plugs or sandpaper the old with the correct gap ( I believe .035")
12.) if you didn't mark the plug wires not a problem... Google '78 Chevy Distributor Firing Order to find terminal #1 on the distributor cap... usually about the 1 o'clock position
13.) install #1 wire to #1 sparkplug... the driver's side front closest to the radiator
14.) the distributor rotates like a clock (clockwise) and the numbers on the clock starting at #1 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.... this is the firing order in a clockwise direction
15.) take the next plug wire #8 and connect it to #8 spark plug
Note: the spark plug numbers are cast into the top of the intake manifold for easier identification
16.) conect the remaining wires to their respective plugs
17.) make certain that you have a full battery charge, some gas in the tank (gas evaporates over 3 years) and a full radiator.
18.) Turn the starter switch and listen for the engine to start
19.) If it doesn't start the first time, try again and wait for the gas to reach the carburetor.... try again
20.) if it still doesn't start spray some engine strating fluid into the carbuetor throat and try again... it should start
21.) if it starts but doesn't keep running then repeat step 20. unitl the gas reaches the carburetor and continues to run on its own...!

Oil around 1 spark plug well.

More than likely you have a leaking valve cover gastet. Not a head gasket.

Try this first before having the engine rebuilt.

Go buy a bottle of Lucas engine treatment and add it to the oil, if in a couple hours of driving you do not gain more power, the engine is not running better Ect. then yes you need to have it rebuilt.

But try this first, this stuff im sending you to get is the leading engine treatment in the world.

I have actually cured engine knocks permantly with htis stuff.
