Question about Cars & Trucks
Hello Dave ,what make , model and year vehicle do you have . Is this something that just started happening ? Some vehicle's light's (brake light's ) won't come on unless the key is on . There controlled by a BCM - body control module . And now a day's all vehicles have a safety device called shift interlocker , won't let the gear selector move if brake pedal isn't pressed . On all newer vehicles any malfunctions will set DTC'S - dciagnostic trouble codes for most systems on the vehicle . This is all beside's the engine computer and OBD2 .

your brake lights also run through the turn signal switch, if the shifter was on the column and you pulled the steering wheel off

You can remove the interlock off the gear shift or maybe spray some crc on it otherwise probably a loose wire or switch

To get the car out of park you have to put the shifter right in between neutral and drive and as soon as the car starts put it in drive. Keep your foot on the brake obviously. You can go to Reversve once you get the car started and in DRive.

Look at the swith on the brake pedal, it shoud have two green wires on it. Make sure it is not melted or the wire is broken. If it is damaged you can connect the 2 wires together to get it into gear, but this should be temporary as it bypasses the neutral safety switch.

For the column shifter it is on the left hand side of the steering wheel column behind the knee panel.
For the console shifter it is under the cup holder, think it is still on the left side.
For either of them, the shift interlock solenoid has a white button on it, that you can press and it will release the gear shift lever.
This is for the 2004 New Body style truck, if you have a 2004 Heritage or Lightning, it is slightly different.
