..if i have a possibly bad ground wire on my gas gauge, where should i look for it?

It's most likely a negative ground system which is grounded thru the frame/ chassis

Proton satria neo 007,fuel guage problem,it will show gas level and then suddelnly the guage will go down and stay there showing no gas and the petrol light dont even work


You need to determine if the sender is bad or the gauge is. If you can get to the signal wire at the fuel tank for the gauge (this goes inside tank to sender that provides a variable ground circuit) ground that wire briefly to see if dash gauge rises. If so, part inside tank is bad. If not, gauge or some part of its wiring circuit is bad.

They gas gauge on my 2006 pacifica touring want go pass 1/4 of a tank I've put a new fuel pump in it what could it be


If the new gas pump included the new sender unit, either you got something interfereing with the sender, or the gauge is bad, or possibly a wiring/ground fault. Was gauge working before you replaced pump?

What can I do to troubleshoot a gas gauge does not work on a 1977 Dodge


If your other dash gauges work, which eliminates the gauge fuse, what you need to do first is determine whether it's the "sending unit" which is in the gas tank. This may not be easy as you may have to lower the gas tank to get to the wires that attach to the sending unit. If you're lucky, the wires may have a connector visible close to the tank. There will be one or two wires. Disconnect them, and then have someone turn the ignition on while they watch the gas gauge. While they watch, ground the wires one at a time to a good, relatively clean metal part of the frame. You may need to use a length of wire connected to a good ground on one end, and touch the other end to each tank wire one at a time. If you dash gas gauge is good, when you ground one of the wires the gas gauge will go all the way to the "full" limit.
If that happens, the gas-tank sending unit is probably bad. If there are two wires going to it though, you need to make sure neither one is broken somewhere. If the gas gauge does NOT go all the way to "full", then you have either a bad wire or a bad gauge.

Of readings are inconsistent with known fuel levels, Ground (or connect to a tester light) the sender unit wire and watch if the gauge rises.

It may be the sending unit in the tank that needs replacing. Here's how you can check: Turn the key on and disconnect the sender unit at the gas tank. Ground the sender unit's wire with a jumper wire from the truck's harness to ground. Watch the gauge. If the gauge on the dash is good, grounding the sender wire will cause the gauge needle to react and should move to full. This would indicate a new sending unit is required. If the gauge doesn't move when the sender unit is grounded, the gauge is bad and needs replacing. Pull the instrument cluster out to replace the gas gauge. Likely any old ford gas gauge might work-back then, there were not so many production changes.

My gas hand is going a little crazy, it will go to full and stay a while then move to empty, and I just put a new fuel pump and sender in it, what should I do now ?


I can only think of two possibilities:
1) The Ground Wire (goes from the sending unit in the fuel tank to the frame of the car) is not getting a good connection or
2) The fuel gauge in the dashboard is bad.

If your description means that the change in the gas gauge is random then check the ground wire. If you have a volt-ohm meter, try checking the resistance from the wire where it attaches to the sending unit, negative side. Remove wire from sending unit first. Make sure negative wire on V_O meter is connected to frame of car. Reading should be almost zero. Anything else and the wire you are testing does not have a good connection.
If your description means that you turn the car on and the gas gauge is reading full for awhile and then goes to empty, the gas gauge is bad.

Guess I'd have to see your gauge to understand what you mean by it turns in a circle. If the gauge is bad you will have to remove the instrument cluster to access it.
If you ground the fuel guage sender wire from the tank's sender unit you can determine whether the gauge itself or the sender unit in the tank is bad.Here's how: Unplug connector at tank. Locate the right wire (gauge sender wire) in the connector and jumper it to a good ground. Observe dash gauge when you turn key to on. If the gauge is good it will move up to half or full when grounded. Then problem is likely the sender unit in tank. But if gauge doesn't move, then it's likely the gauge itself.

I have a 2000 buick Le Sabre. gas gauge does not work properly. i filled the tank and the gas gauge reads full. and it works properly past half. then it starts flucturating. i disconnected the gas gauge...


There are three possibilities. The gauge could be defective. The instrument panel voltage regulator could be bad or not grounded or (most expensive) it might be the sending unit.

Could have one of several issues, if your wiring does not look bad in other sections, then focus on a possible bad fuel pump. If wiring is bad, recommend you replace or repair.

Gas gauge on 2004 pontiac montana sticks


Before you start your van, and the key's are on accesory. Does your needle move? If it does, your gage is good and you have a bad ground or wire harness. Worst you could have a bad  sending unit and that is in the gas tank it self. Start with checking all the wire connection. Good luck.
