Hi. I've got a 1988 Dodge B-150 5.2 liter. Gas mileage is down, running rich, low rough idle. Changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Fuel pressure reg is good. Computer shows no fault codes. Any ideas?

Consider taking it into a MUFFLER SHOP...
Some do FREE inspections...

I have has that mystery tour twice... but ONE was giving Oxygen sensor failures (?) ... on the "95 ECU (Jaguar)...
Trouble: Jammed up catalytic converter.

On my 1975 Ranchero (nothing of course (no OBD))
Everything "electronic" on that vehicle was the radio and
ignition module...
Trouble = rusted muffler baffle finally broke loose and COMPLETELY blocked the out-flow...

Yours might only be a partial blockage...

But even with the engine codes it took a long and "exhausting" time to find MY TROUBLES (pun intended)

Hope this helps!

SOURCE: 95 GMC Jimmy 4.3l W vin rough idle

My problem was solved when I repaired my 4 wd activation dash switch. The switch was contacting on 2WD & 4HI at the same time. The front differential activation is vacuum activated possibly creating a tug of war that didn't actually engage it but drained off vacuum from the engine? A theory at best but stumbbled across it because I knew the switch wasn't working properly I repaired it and low and behold rough idle disappeared and all is good for 3 weeks running.

SOURCE: My 1995 S500 Mercedes Benz is idling very rough.

before you spend any more money on your vehicle run a cylinder compression test. I know it seems unlikley with less than 100,000 miles but 119 engines do like to burn valves. the LH fuel injection system was only used from 93-95. LH is a germen abreviation for hot wire mass airflow. The later systems use a hot film. Your vehicle has electronic fuel injection so why did you have the fuel injecters pressure cleaned. unless you have the cis system which means your car is not a 95. Motor mounts are also a very common failure on that vehicle. In any event rule out the worst case and perform a compression test because it really sucks to spend alot on an engine and find out it needs a valve job. I'm assuming that the check engine light is not on. although wireharness issues are another common issue. these early C.A.N. cars are very difficult to troubleshoot electronically and the information provided by the factory is difficult to follow.

SOURCE: 95 Chevy C-1500 runs rough at idle and during accelleration

Check the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator and check to see if the fuel pressure regulator has gone bad. Give the throttle body a good cleaning and the injectors too. Do not use carb cleaner, it's to corrosive for the gaskets used in the throttle body. The other thing too that would cause this is a stuck or bad EGR valve, Try cleaning the EGR valve too since your cleaning the throttle body. Good luck and keep me posted.

SOURCE: 1996 Honda Accord Rough Idle Even After tune up

Perform a valve clearance inspection and adjust if necessary. Tight or sticking valves will cause a misfire or rough running concern. Note: Perform valve adjustment when the engine is stone cold. 4cyl: INT 0.26mm EXH: 0.30mm (V6 engine are hydraulic and no adjust necessary.) Also check for a sticking or stuck open EGR valve. For diagnostic purposes only: Remove the EGR valve. Place a business card over the EGR passage and bolt the EGR valve back on. This plugs the EGR ports and if the misfire goes away the EGR valve is partially stuck open and is defective.
Check for low fuel pressure. Check for low compression. Check cam timing. Check for a weak ignition coil. Also don't over look the possibility of worn or broken engine mounts which cause excessive engine movement and engine vibration. -hope this helps

The regulator is on top of the engine along the gas line. It has a vacuum line on top. Start the truck and pull the vacuum line off the regulator. If fuel comes out of the regulator, it has failed. You can run pretty rich with a busted regulator-especially at idle.

Hi, my1997 dakota with a 3.9 engine has a rough idle, has plenty of power i replaced plugs, wires, cap, pcv, rotor and added fuel cleaner. its a little better but still has a rough idle

My uncle worked at a dodge dealership as a head mechanic for over 30 years and he also found all of the 3.9 liter engines to have the rough idle. The rough idle cannot be explained but it can be made worse by buildup on the engine. I have a 2001 Dakota sport with the 3.9 and mine does it too and one of the first times i drove it it stalled and its not a Manuel transmission. But onc I changed the oil and put Lucas oil additive as well as regular additives to my gas every month or so it has reduced greatly and not stalled since. Hopefully you find this helpful.
