Question about 1997 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

97 Camry 122k miles. Metallic rattling noise on driver's side rear. Worse in warm/hot weather and at lower speeds. I have a great mechanic who has replaced my struts before and has checked out the noise, but says struts are ok. I even took out the spare to make sure nothing metal was loose in the trunk. It's really annoying... car runs and looks great otherwise... what else could it be?

Check anti-roll/sway bar rubber bushings. This is typical in these models to make clunky suspension noises. hopefully this helps

Have you checked the REAR whell bearings? Sometimes even when the noise appears to come from the front, the rear bearing can be the ones. Happende to me in my older Spirit R/T. By spinning the rear Wheel with an old impulsor motor in a Wheel balancing/alignment shop, the technician showed me that it wasn't a front drive problema, but rear bearings getting some moisture inside and going bad. It made a worse glowl when turning to one side. Amclaussen.

My 2004 Prius has a rattling metallic sound on acceleration. It is coming from the top of the engine on the passenger side. Does anyone know what this can be?

Does the car make this sound when the car has just been turned off and engine is still hot? Lightly push the car back and forth while it's in park. Does it still make that sound?

LIGHTS AND BLOWER FLASH ON/OFF

I had the flashing lights problem all last winter. In warm weather it doesn't happen, and the lights stay on when in manual mode.Rear defrost and cruise control quit working, and toggling rear defrost when headlights were on automatic turned them on and off.
Alternator was replaced 5 years ago. Olds dealer fixed a stalling and lights off and dimming problem by repairing 4 corroded grounding straps under the hood.
New mechanic is looking into the new problem, which I suspect began when I had a power steering hose leak that corrupted the grounds. Sometimes the climate control, heat and A/C quit entirely. Very bad in winter!
Other problems with 150K miles include new window operating switch, driver's side, service engine light going on at the same spot on my commute every day, and going off at lower altitude, and occasional rough shifting.
The motor burns oil, about a quart every 1500 miles, but no white smoke noticeable in back.
Motor runs great, and the car is tight and quiet.

1997 Toyota camry vibrates when i brake hard.

You are on the right track with the struts. With 212,000 miles, it is a great possibility that your shocks are worn out. With extra weight in the car, the shocks are suppose to keep the car from "bottoming out".

The creaking noises can also be caused by this and will be worse in cold weather. Does the creaking seem to go away a bit when you have been driving for a bit? When the gas in the chamber of the shocks warms up it expands and is able to hold the car up better.

Now, for the main problem. Usually vibration when braking is cause by warped or damaged rotors. The damaged rotors have probably caused the brakes to go bad as well. You can have a mechanic look at the rotors to see if they can be turned which will give them a flat surface. They may have to be replaced. Other causes could be the tie rod wearing out or wheel bearings wearing out. If the only time the car vibrates is when you brake, then more than likely it is your rotors. The ABS sensor is located very close to these components. It is likely that it is a faulty code and can be erased. The sensor may have been damage due to the excessive vibration. I recommend finding a mechanic very soon to look at your rotors.

Rattling noise coming from the driver side of the car when I drove over 40 miles per hour.

It sounds like 1 of 2 problems but to start with jack up the drivers side rear of car and block front wheels with 2 blocks of wood or 2 bricks , put a stand under chassis and then your safe to work.
Release hand brake and spin rear wheels ..and then hold 1 hand bottom and top and try to shake the wheel.. any movement means worn bearings ..any noise when spinning means worn wheel bearings..If ok
get under the car and bang the exhaust all along and if the rattle comes when you get to the muffler you have you answer.
Let me know how you get on . RON
