Question about 1987 Chevrolet Cavalier 4 Door
The oil light comes on after about 30 minutes of driving. When I pop the hood to check the oil, the engine is really hot. The radiator is full and the engine fan is working. What can I check next?
HI. the oil light will illuminate on three occasions. one would be a low oil level situation. The second issue will be a faulty sending unit(oil pressure sensor/switch). The last possible reason for an illuminated oil light would be a damaged oil pump/screen.
I would advise to inspect the above areas for faults. The most common area at fault will be the Oil pressure switch(sending unit). the worst case will be a damaged oil pump. You have already stated that the oil level is in good condition so, this is not an issue. The pressure switch is located Under hood, passenger side, rear engine area, below intake manifold, mounted on engine block
Check the electrical connector for faults. if the connector and wires are ok, replace the switch. if the switch and wires are in sound state, this will confirm a failing oil pump. replace the oil pump and pump screen in this case.
