Question about 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

2009 Grand Cherokee starts with FOB but shuts down after 3 seconds. Also, in winter blows cold air for 15 minutes before finally providing heat. MIL lite throughout. Two problems with one solution?

Also have Electronic Throttle Control light coming on intermittently.

You failed to scan it. like 99% off all posts here do not do....
you can not fix cars, with no tools , no scan tools.
The ASD has the 3 second rule and if 1 to 8 things fail
in 3 seconds the ASD drops. both driving or cranking.
FOB, (you mean remote start":?) yes/no.

the car needs service, the operators guide told you that.
and it does. "check engine light" get car serviced, as 99.9% do.
if you have no tools why ask how to fix a complex system.?

how cold is your winter, we cant guess that. -50F?
if its warm out say 32F (that is warm) then my guess is
your engine thermostat is bad, they can fail in 7 years of service.
so says the maker of it and why.
if in Alaska and -50F, this be a different and more complex answer.
(park in a garage with engine block heater pulled in)

The Scans will show what is wrong
as will the keyon 3 times, key jive.

Make sure your fan clutch is working. No fan, no cooling of the condenser, no heat dissipation, no cold air. Start the truck and make sure you feel air movement, a lot.

I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix with a digital climate control system. The heat quit working, it doesn't blow out any heat. Now that it is warm outside the air stopped blowing out any air. The digital temperature on the climate control is not correct. When it states that it is below 30 degrees on the ext and it is warm outside the air wont be cold. Once it starts going above 30 degrees the air gets colder. Today the blower stop working all together. Was told it maybe the climate control unit was bad. You can hear the door opening/shutting when you switch the temp from cold to hot. But there was no heat blowing out whatsoever in the winter time. Could you please give me your opinion on whether or not it is the climate control unit or something else?

My 1996 jeep grand cherokee is blowing cold air for the first 30 minutes of my ride home (20-degree weather), then warms up slightly but never gets hot -- i'm guessing heater core (it has 200k+ miles)

It is most likely a thermostat. As your car gets older the thermostat begins to lose its spring like properties and stays open all the time causing your car to never warm up.

If you can't tackle right away, start your car in the morning and let it run for about 15 minutes to warm up. Be sure to turn the heat on full blast and recirculate the air.

Hi Jens,

Two things are happening.

The first is normal. Your heater gets its heat from the coolant ciculating in your engine. In order for it to work, the coolant needs time to heat up a bit. This is true of just about every vehicle.

When it gets cold again is the puzzler.

My advice is to check the coolant level in the radiator.

ONLY when the engine has cooled.

If the level is down, there can be times when there isn't enough water to cool the engine, fill the radiator and the heater core. The result is the heater blows cold air and the engine runs hotter than normal.

So check the coolant. Open the cap. Start the engine and top it off.

Then see if there is a change.

Best regards,
Mike

Vehicle needs to purge all the air form the radiator. Jeep Grand

Start vehicle when cold. remove rad cap, start engine & put heater on (not defrost) and let it run for a while & top up rad as coolant goes down, to about an inch or 2 from top of rad. If you have electric rad fans, watch temperature gauge and around normal operating temperature or slightly above, they should come on for a minute or 2 then shut off. If not electric fans, just watch in top of rad for increased flow through rad, indicating thermostat has opened & coolant is circulating. Rev engine slightly every once in a while for 5 or 10 seconds just to help increase flow etc to help assist bleeding air out faster. Watch for increased flow in rad, 2 or 3 times at least, or listen for fan to go on & off 2 or 3 times before putting rad cap back on. As your doing this, keep topping up rad if it needs it. Make sure rad cap on all the way, check coolant return bottle level & add to mark if required, and you should be good to go. One of the things people forget to do the most, is to turn heater on while doing this, and that is usually what causes a lot of airlocks in the system, so don't forget that step.
