Question about 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

2 Answers

I have a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero 2.4L with automatic. The serpentine belt broke and ripped a wire out leading to the tranny, now speedometer doesn't work. Where does this wire lead to?

The wire was running through a plastic shield which is loose on one end but still connected below at the tranny. The car also isn't shifting right when driven.

The wire is black and has a but splice connector crimped on one end so it looks like it was replaced before I got the car. There is a purple wire that's broke off at the front off the car under the alternator going into the same wiring harness as the alternator wires. Could this be where the speed sensor wire needs to be connected?

It goes to the PCM - engine computer ! It's probably for the VSS - vehicle speed sensor . What color wire ? purple , yellow .
Speedometer
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the vehicle speed based on the information from the vehicle speed sensor. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the powertrain control module (PCM) indicating the vehicle speed. The IPC calculates the vehicle speed based on the class 2 message indicating the wheel reference speed from the electronic brake control module (EBCM) if:
• The PCM detects a malfunction in the vehicle speed sensor circuit.
• The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.
The speedometer defaults to 0 km/h (0 mph) if the IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with both the PCM and the EBCM.

The speedo sensor is on the passenger side, mounted in the transmission, close to the axle. Only sensor there.

Power steering suddenly went out - no noticeable signs

Shouldn't be too difficult. But before you let the blind lead the blind, you should get advice from someone familiar with the Alero system. No pulley for the pump? I wonder how it gets its power, then. Is it possible there's an electric motor for the pump? ( Letting you know how blind I am on this.)
Just saying don't start throwing a lot of new, expensive parts at it till you know more about it. Little things like variable assist may be a factor at play here. Anyway, I hope someone from here can help you more.

How do you change a serpentine belt on a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero?

Brute force - you have to pry up the tensioner pulley. The way we did it was put the belt over the alternator and A/C compressor, and get it back in place around the main bearing pulley. Then we took a bar and forced up the tensioner and slid the belt over the main bearing pulley. Voila . . .

My alero lost power and it turned to have had a blown head gasket. Get a compression test to find out.
