These valves are not adjustable, they are hydraulic design. If they are noisy then there is a problem with the followers.

If yours is an Xu series engine, you need to use a torque wrench and an angle dial wrench. Tightening is in 3 stages.

  • Stage 1: Tighten up to 60Nm (44 lb/ft) then fully loosen
  • Stage 2: Tighten up to 20Nm (15lb/ft) change to angle dial wrench
  • Stage 3: Angle tighten to 300 deg.
To avoid confusion, do stage 3 in 3 steps, tighten 100 deg each round and repeating the cycle until 3 rounds.

Can you explain the steps to change the fuel filter on my 6.5 Diesel GMC Blazer.


Hi, to change the fuel filter, follow the steps below.

Disconnect the negative cable at the battery.

Loosen the fuel tank filler cap to relieve any fuel tank vapor pressure.

Wrap a shop towel around the Schrader valve on the fuel rail and remove the dust cap from the valve.

Connect the fuel pressure gauge to the Schrader valve.

Install the free end of the gauge bleed hose into an approved gasoline container, and open the gauge bleed valve to relieve the fuel pressure.

Flush the fuel filter line connectors with water, and use compressed air to blow debris off and away from the connectors.

Remove the fuel inlet and outlet lines from the filter following manufacture recommendations (have something around to catch gas that is in the lines and to lay the lines in while prepairing to put new filter on.

To install a new filter, begin by wiping the male tube ends of the new filter with a clean shop towel.

Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube ends on the filter.

Check the quick connectors to be sure the large collar on each connector has rotated back to the original position. The springs must be visible on the inside diameter of each quick connector.

Then install the filter in the proper direction and leave the mounting bolt slightly loose.

Install the outlet connector onto the filter outlet tube and press the connector firmly in place until the
spring snaps into position.

Grasp the fuel line and try to pull this line from the filter to be sure the quick connector is locked in place.

Then, do the same with the inlet connector.

Now tighten the filter retaining bolt to the specified torque.

Once everything is connected, lower the vehicle, start the engine, and check for fuel leaks at the filter.

Removal
  1. Drain engine cooling system.
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) .
  1. Remove engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600) including air cleaner outlet tube (9B659) .
  1. Loosen drive belt tensioner (6B209). Remove drive belts (8620) .
  1. If LH cylinder head (6049) is being removed, perform the following:
    1. Remove oil filler cap (6766) .
    1. Remove power steering pump front mounting bracket retaining bolts.
    1. Remove generator (GEN) (10346) and belt idler pulley (8678).
    1. Remove power steering pump/generator bracket retaining bolts. Leave hoses connected, place pump/bracket assembly aside in a position to prevent fluid from leaking out.
  1. If RH cylinder head is being removed, perform the following:
    1. Remove drive belts .
    1. If equipped with A/C, remove mounting bracket retaining bolts. Leave hoses connected and position A/C compressor (19703) aside.
    1. Remove positive crankcase ventilation valve (PCV valve) (6A666) .
  1. Remove upper intake manifold (9424) .
  1. Remove valve cover retaining bolts.
  1. Remove fuel injection supply manifold (9F792).
  1. Remove lower intake manifold as outlined.
  1. Remove exhaust manifolds (9430) as outlined.
  1. Loosen rocker arm seat retaining bolts enough to allow rocker arm (6564) to be lifted off the push rod (6565) and rotate to one side.
  1. Remove push rods . Identify position of each push rod . Push rods should be installed in their original position during assembly.
  1. Remove cylinder head retaining bolts and discard.
  1. Remove cylinder heads .
  1. Remove and discard old head gaskets (6051) .
Installation
  1. NOTE: Lightly oil all bolts and stud bolt threads before installation except those specifying special sealant.
    Clean cylinder head, intake manifold , valve cover (6582) and head gasket surfaces. If cylinder head was removed for head gasket replacement, check flatness and sealing areas for scratches of cylinder head and cylinder block gasket surfaces. Refer to Section 03-00 for procedure.
  2. Position new head gaskets onto cylinder block (6010) using cylinder head to block dowels (6A008) for alignment.

      • Tighten bolt an additional 85-95 degrees.
      • Go to next bolt in sequence.
    1. Short bolts:
      • 10-20 Nm (7-15 lb-ft).
      • Tighten bolt an additional 85-95 degrees.
      • Go to next bolt in sequence.

    Dip each push rod end in Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford Specification ESR-M99C80-A and install push rods in their original position.
  8. For each valve, rotate crankshaft (6303) until valve tappet (6500) rests on the heel (base circle) of the camshaft lobe, before tightening rocker arm seat retaining bolts to 7-15 Nm (5-11 lb-ft) maximum.
  9. Lubricate all rocker arms with Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford Specification ESR-M99C80-A. Final-tighten the rocker arm seat bolts to 30-40 Nm (22-30 lb-ft). For final tightening, camshaft (6250) may be in any position.
  10. Install exhaust manifolds as outlined.
  11. Install lower intake manifold as outlined.
  12. Install fuel injection supply manifold .
  13. Position valve cover and new valve cover gasket (6584) on cylinder head and install retaining bolts. Note location of ignition wire routing clip stud bolts. Tighten retaining bolts to 9-12 Nm (7-9 lb-ft).
  14. Install upper intake manifold .Install spark plugs (12405) , if removed.
  15. Connect ignition wires to the spark plugs .
  16. If LH cylinder head is being installed, perform the following:
    1. Install oil filler cap.
    1. Install generator/power steering pump mounting bracket.
    1. Install generator .
    1. Install main accessory drive belt tensioner .
    1. Install power steering pump (3A674) .
    1. Install power steering pump support bracket.If RH cylinder head is being installed, perform the following:
    1. Install positive crankcase ventilation valve .
    1. If equipped with A/C, install A/C compressor mounting brackets (2882) and A/C compressor .
  17. Install drive belt and tighten to specification.
  18. Connect battery ground cable .
  19. Install air cleaner outlet tube.

THERMOSTAT REMOVAL

HINT: Removal of the thermostat would have an adverse

effect causing a lowering of cooling efficiency. Do not remove

the thermostat, even if the engine tends to overheat.

1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT

2. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP WITH AIR CLEANER

HOSE

3. DISCONNECT ECT SW1TCH CONNECTORS

4. DISCONNECT ENGINE VIRE PROTECTOR FROM

WATER INLET AND RH CYLINDER HEAD

Remove the 2 nuts, and disconnect the engine wire

protector from the water inlet and cylinder head.

5. DISCONNECT WATER INLET PIPE FROM WATER

INLET AND LH CYLINDER HEAD

a) Remove the bolt and disconnect the inlet pipe from the

water inlet.

b) Remove the O-ring from the inlet pip e.

6. REMOVE WATER INLET AND THERMOSTAT

a) Remove the 3 nuts, water inlet and thermostat.

b) Remove the gasket from the thermostat.

INSPECTION

INSPECT THERMOSTAT

HINT: The thermostat is numbered with the valve opening

temperature.

a) immerse the thermostat in water and gradually heat the

water.

b) Check the valve opening temperature.

Valve opening temperature: 80 - 84CC (176- 183 deg f)

If the valve opening temperature is not as specified,

replace the thermostat.

c) Check the valve lift.

Valve lift: 10.0 mm (0.394 inch) or more at 95CC (203 deg f)

If the valve lift is not as specified, replace the

d) Check that the valve is fully closed when the

thermostat is at low temperatures (below 40CC (104CF)).

if not dosed, replace the thermostat.

INSTALLATION

1. PLACE THERMOSTAT IN WATER PUMP

a) Install a new gasket on to the thermostat.

b) Align the thermostat jiggle valve with the upper stud

bolt and insert the thermostat in the water inlet

housing.

HINT: The jiggle valve maybe set within 15 deg of either

side of the prescribed position.

2. INSTALL WATER INLET

Install the water inlet with the 3 nuts.

Torque: 8.0 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.)

3. INSTALL WATER INLET PIPE

a) Install a new O-ring to the water inlet pipe.

No compression on #4 cylinder on a 84 Mazda 2.0L Where is the exhaust going? What part do I need to fix it? Thank You!


If there is a COMPRESSiON leak in ur cylinder, either ur intake valve or exhaust valve is open during compression! First check ur gap settings of push rod or valve CLEARANCE using FEELER GAUGE. Check also ur BLOW BACK gas by opening ur OiL CAP, and run the engine, too much air from that oil inlet means ur PiSTON RiNGS are busted. Finally, sometimes SPARK PLUG are LOOSE or threads are gone and gas scapes thru that area! Hope that might help u out!

Do you mean 1.7L? I do not see a 1.6L in the manual. Instructions from autozone.com are pasted below.

Intake, 0.007-0.009 in (0.18-0.22mm).

Exhaust, 0.009-0.011 in. (0.23-0.27mm)

NOTE Adjust valves only when the cylinder head temperature is less than 100 degrees F.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Note the radio security code and the radio presets.
  3. Remove the ignition coil cover. Remove the ignition coils. Remove the throttle cable clamps and harness holder from the cylinder head cover.
  4. Remove the cylinder head cover retaining bolts. Remove the cylinder head cover from the engine.
  5. Remove the grommet from the upper cover and disconnect the camshaft position (CMO) sensor connector. Remove the upper cover.
  6. Set the number one piston at TDC. The UP mark on the camshaft pulley should be at the top, and the TDC marks on the pulley should line up with the top edge of the cylinder head.
  7. Using the proper gauge feeler gauge, adjust the valves on cylinder number one.
  8. Rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees counterclockwise. The UP mark on the camshaft pulley should be toward the exhaust side of the cylinder head.
  9. Using the proper gauge feeler gauge, adjust the valves on cylinder number three.
  10. Rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees counterclockwise and bring the number four piston to TDC.
  11. Using the proper gauge feeler gauge, adjust the valves on cylinder number four.
  12. Rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees counterclockwise. The UP mark on the camshaft pulley should be toward the intake side of the cylinder head.
  13. Using the proper gauge feeler gauge, adjust the valves on cylinder number two.
  14. Install the cylinder head cover.
  15. As required, reprogram the ECM/PCM engine idle characteristics. Be sure all electrical items are OFF.
  16. Start the engine. Hold the idle speed at 3000 RPM-s in park or neutral until the radiator fan comes on or the temperature reached 194 degrees.
  17. Let the engine idle for about five minutes with the throttle fully closed.
  18. If the radiator fan comes on during the five minutes, do not count this toward the five minute programming time.
  19. Set the clock.

Another Alternate Method For In-Line Engines An alternate and perhaps somewhat quicker method is to follow the accompanying diagram which is arranged so that any piston can be at top center to start.

On Straight 8 Cars

Start with the cylinder in the firing position (piston up, both valve lifters down) and work around the diagram in the direction of the arrow. Count the cylinder in firing position as the first cylinder.
1st—Both.
2nd—Exhaust.
3rd—Inlet.
4th—Inlet.
5th—Exhaust valve.
6th—Exhaust valve.
7th—Inlet.
8th—None.
Rotate the engine one full turn to bring the same pair of pistons to top center, but now the opposite cylinder will be in firing position. Again start with the cylinder in the firing position and again work around the chart in the direction of the arrow.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Air cleaner outlet duct
    • Engine mount
    • Intake manifold
    • Exhaust manifold
    • Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector
    • Power steering pump
    • Radiator inlet pipe
    • Spark plug wires
    • Rocker arm cover

    NOTE Whenever valve train components are removed, keep them in order for installation purposes.

    • Rocker arms and pushrods
    • Lifters
    • Alternator rear brace and the alternator
    • Power steering pump
    • Radiator inlet pipe
    • Ignition coil assembly
    • Accessory bracket
    • Spark plug wires
    • Cylinder head bolts

    WARNING Two sizes of bolts are used; note the location of each.

    • Cylinder head
  5. Inspect the cylinder head and block surface for cracks, nicks, heavy scratches and flatness.

  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Cylinder head with a new gasket and new cylinder head bolts. Torque the long bolts, in sequence to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm) and the short bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm) plus an additional 90 degree turn on all the bolts.
    • Lifters
    • Pushrods and rocker arms. Torque nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    • Rocker arm cover. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    • Spark plug wires
    • Accessory bracket
    • Ignition coil assembly
    • Radiator inlet pipe
    • Power steering pump. Torque the bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    • ECT sensor electrical connector
    • Exhaust manifold. Torque the nuts to 118 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
    • Alternator. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    • Intake manifold. Torque the bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
    • Engine mount. Torque the bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
    • Air cleaner outlet duct
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Negative battery cable
  2. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  3. Start the vehicle and inspect for leaks.
