I would begin by checking the condition of the engine oil. If its black and thick, might want to change first. Then, manually turn the engine over to see if you are able to do so. If it's a gas engine, recommend you remove all the spark plugs to make it easier to turn. Also might want to remove serpentine belt.
Are you able to identify where the noise if coming from when trying to start the car ? If so, after doing above procedures, have someone turn key and you verify noise.
