I have done everything except change the ECU. I checked the coil no fire there I check the distributor no fire there I check the fuel rail is getting fuel I've even done the anti-theft Thing by grounding the wire out and trying to like that still nothing I'm confused maybe it's the brain box I don't know I mean it was running fine and then shut it off and go out the next morning to start it up and all it does is spend over

    FOCUS ON SPARK !
what engine is there?? why must i ask 2 times?

    now lets diagnose.
    1: cranks ok, (check)
2: fuses ok, "security" lamp out. not flashing either. (in the cluster, key on)

3: i then check the ASD relay.
this relay must pull in (energize)
and hold there, during the full time cranking event by you, if not the PCM has errors stored you fail to read.
If the ASD fails to energize
    we diagnose that
if the ASD drops when cranking, we work that.
Even the ASD can be bad, that be a cheap guess.> no?
if the ASD drops while cranking. then 4 or more are bad (TPS,CKP,CMP,VTSS)
and ASD bad, or fuel pump feed dead or stuck on.

the ASD can also drop if it sees fuel pump
voltage fail. (all this is in the service manual, if you RTM)
the scan tool tells why? in all cases.
How ever a bad IGN coil may not set a code.

A question did you remove the distributor
and then mess up injector synchronization ?
on the 4.0l with 42RE transmission has CKP sensor that can not be removed,or it gets damaged. it has calibration spacer.
.030" to set it, if not done like the
the next cranking wrecks the end of the sensor (smashes it) (1bolt slotted hole is it)!!! ASK ! have a fix. and cure.

so , no engine stated, no trans, cant help much but attempt to cover both engines
    and all trans.
if you did wreck the CKP sensor
the scans tell you, that you did.

the 2 bolt CKP are slam dunk easy swaps.
THE ASD also checks its self and if bad
shuts off, odd no but true
The PCM monitors its ASD output pin
if its dead, the PCM shuts it off;.
and sets DTC errors to tell you IT DID THAT.
the ASD uses a 3 second rule.
if it closes and the errors do not clear in
3 seconds, its drops the ASD. 1993 to now.
DTC codes (errors) all killl spark and asd.
    11
    24
    42
    53
    54
    at least.
last the key jive DTC error method
its not the best by a long shot.
    but real and CAN work.https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl...\

I added the VTSS cheater wire to my main post.

dave changing out parts, buy guessing is
    a 50:1 shot. and expensive.
we do hope you get lucky, sure....
but guessing will not find most problems.
    what you dont know, is
you can not fix modern cars lacking a scan too.
I can, but have a shop full meters ,gauges and other tools.
this allows me to fix cars before 1996.
the ones with old dumbb PCMs
    also changing out parts
and doing the steps wrong, invites
    making it worse.
CKP with 1 bolt hole? fail.
distributor out and not reading how to do this right in the SM, is a FAIL.

Why not answer simple questions first?
how many miles ? on this car?
no engine stated 4L or 5.2L???????????????????????
I guess you are working with no scan tool.?
NO voltmeter
I see now the only fact we have is the single
outside, spark coil is dead. 1 fact.
if its good (simple tests, ohm out the primary and secondary yet>?)
so that means the ECU is cutting spark
In fact I bet the ASD relay is not energizing
or is dropping out while cranking.
if the ASD drops, spark ends, a fact.
if the ASD drops you must scan it or use the key jive test (key on 3 times)
If the ASD drops do not buy a new PCM

the ASD drops for many reasons up to 8.
including VTSS errors. (yup)

1: ckp dead.
2: cmp dead
3: TPS pin 2, throttle angle at 100% or near 5v.
new 1volt is correct , foot off gas pedal.
4: If PCM see's spark is dead, it cuts fuel.with ASD
the ASD logic uses a 3 second rule.
all the above, must be good or it drops
when it drops vast things go off line,
fuel, and spark and more. its for crash protection
no crash and burn as seen on TV, and USA law.

questions
did you pull out the CKP ,with 1 bolt type, and slotted hole?
oops
did you pull out the distributor then not prevent loss of injector timing, oops2.
IS the cluster warning lamp on "SECURITY"
oops VTSS is un happy if yes, it can be bypassed
on this wire. below, VT/YL

here is the tool that works on this carhttp://innova.com/en-US/Product/Detail/3...

do the key jive test. see DTC's
    the sensors can be tested
    with a scope
    a volt meter
    or an LED test light.
ask , i can do them ALL ways.

so all we know so far, is coil is dead
    spark coil dead.
    crank for 5 seconds
key off then on 3 times go get into diag mode
    and flash codes?
    got flash codes.? NOW.

this is the only free simple tests.
    all other tests TAKE TOOLS
the cheapest tool is a voltmeter, $10
    got one?

Can you be more specific as to what your issues are ? When you turn the key to start, does the engine turn over ? If you turn the key and it does not turn over, may want to check your battery. If it does turn over, do you have spark at the plugs ? If yes, may want to check fuel delivery. If not, may want to check for codes in ECM. If nothing happens when you turn the key, may want to check power to the starter. If there is power, then you may have a bad starter. If not, check fuses and then wiring.

Check the starter, selinoid, and then the ignition switch if the motor will not turn over. If it turns over without fire check the ignition coil and then the distributor.

try replacing the sockets in the tailights/brake lights. worked for me. $10 each. i had to replace all of mine because just replacing the brake sockets didn't solve the problem on the right side. you can test it by exchanging tail light for brake light socket and if that works you know it is the socket

Ive got a 94 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 liter i put a 93 4.0 liter and caint get it to fire but it has different distributor

i think you pretty much answered your own question there. Use the '94 distributor in the other engine and make sure that all the sensors are in place, connected and all for a 94. Also check the crank position sensor. If left in place during install, they can get damaged if the flywheel hits it. (hope you matched the flywheels too...if different, it will not run.

My 1996 jeep grand cherokee started up this morning then cut off on me. now it will roll over but wont start

check the fire at the coil as well as distributor if you dont have fire there when cranking then check your igniton module if there is fire? then your fuel system has shut down could be a faulty pump / filter/ or stuck injector which happens in cold weather and having just a drop or two of water in your fuel system

The crankshaft position sensor was seriously problematic in those old jeeps. It's located towards the top of the bell housing slightly to the driver's side I think.

94 jeep grand cherokee limited

Could be the neutral safety switch. You can test it fairly easily by following the instructions on testing the continuity of the pins in the switch socket at this site http://cherokee-jeep.com/1-2swremov.htm
The switch is on the passenger side of the transmission, cable is about 2 feet long and can be unplugged under the hood near the passenger side of the firewall where it comes up from underneath the car. If any of the gears aren't reading continuity it may need to be replaced.
