You need to have a complete gear box check as it has leaked fluid, there is not much help you can get here now.As for the solenoid thing, it's a sensor which controls gear change which someone else told you. This will require more hand on expertise help now due to this leak.

Normally the car will not go into gear due two 2 reasons. iT could be because of electrical, issues, such as sensor or the solenoid not working or the mechanical such as the transmission valves blocked or not working properly. In your case, you observed oil coming out of the transmission. It could be connected to the vehicle not going into overdrive. I would suggest first to trace where the oil is coming from bu having the tranny cleaned out first. New oil leaking should be observed and you should be able to trace where it comes from. It could be from oil seals. You may want to check deeper by opening the tranny up if you wish to do this yourself. Check first the solenoid, it has black and red wire connected to it. Check if there is voltage running to it and if it has continuity when you use a tester. It also has an oil seal at its end, you may check it out if it causes the leaking. You may also want to check the valves if they are blocked. Normally they get blocked by oil resedue.

Check the fluid level. You may want to consider having the transmission flushed. (I recommend BG Products flush system.) Properly flushing the trans removes any varnish the may have built up causing erratic behavior.

Is it ok to start off in 2nd gear and manually shift up to 3rd and then overdrive?

You can put the shifter in 2, 3, or overdrive. It will still start in first and shift up to whatever gear you have selected. Try it, you wont damage anythingl

Does the trany fluid smell burnt? Might want to have the trany flushed - torque converter too - and replace the filter in the trans. FYI you may know this but it is not recomended that overdrive be enabled when pulling a trailer - especially a heavily loaded one. Does your town have lots of hills - this is an added stain on the trany.

Have 1st 2nd and reverse, no drive 1988 model 2 wd

sounds like 3rd gear clutch is out (it might have blew out a lip seal or something)
pull the pan c if there is a lot of black on the bottom of pan (no 3rd = no 4th either) the 3rd gear clutches are engaged along with the 4th gear clutches to make overdrive
if the tcc cable is out of adjustment it mite shift at wot (wide open throttle) max rpm (5000-5500)
if it just 1,2, neutral its probly clutches

Your transmission fluid contain water, thats why the colour of the fluid changed to pink. And of such the clutch is slipping causing the engine to reve up before shifting - Check transmission cooler.
