SOURCE: My 2005 ford explorer check charging system warning light

if charging light is on w/ engine running, the fault could be the alternator or another component of the charging system.remove, clean and tighten battery post connections to check for alternator output, use a volt meter or multi-tester set to 50 Volts DC,w/ tester on battery terminals it should read 12 volts W/ engine off;13 to 14 volts w/engine running.if voltage increases when alternator is spinning, suspect battery

SOURCE: my 2005 ford explorer the

I have the same problem. In the past I have had the alternator replaced and battery replaced. Once it started this again and took it to a different garage they told me it is a known problem for explorers and expeditions and it maybe that the warning sensor is bad which is located in the alternator, or the computer board is bad. I have choosen to not replace anything and it has been almost two years and everything in that department seems to be fine. When the check charging system goes off I check the battery gage and nothing changes and I also check if any lights go deem, and they dont. I have not had any problems starting my vehicle either. The beeping noise can be agnoring, but i don't want to keep throwing money at it only for it to happen again.

Yes, using a tire of a different size will likely set the lights. Not sure what your local emissions test requires, but I would not put a bunch of miles on the car with the spare.

Do you have gauges on this car also?
If so, you may have a problem with what is called a "current shunt" resistor. This will prevent the car from recharging the battery....accordianman
