Could be a blown head gasket between cylinders if you can do a compression check when cold and after it dies on you.

I had the same exact problem with mine. Redone entire ignition system and did not fix it. Replaced filter and high pressure pump on the frame rail, still no fix. I replaced the low pressure in - tank pump and been running like a champ since!

Sound like fuel system too lean check fuel pressure.if all is good hook vacuum gauge up to intake check vacuum gauge.it should be reading at least 17 to 20 hg.if its 10 to 12 hg with low fluctuating. you got a vacuum leak at intake.also your catlytic converter and exhaust could be plugged or stopped up.

Old '87 ranger been sitting in folks yard few years. fires up fine, but spits and sputters going down the road

Old fuel in tank, fuel filter clogged, plugged/clogged carb. or fuel injectors.

1. Drain fuel from tank and replace with new fuel with SeaFoam or Lucas

2. Repace fuel filter

3. With engine running at a high idle and air cleaner off, spray or pour carb/fuel injection cleaner into carb/fuel injectors.

If problems persist, check plug wires for cracks and/or breaks. Pull spark plugs checking for fouling.

When advancing down highway vehecle spits and sputters then clears up then spits and sputters what is it

When was last tune up? Plugs, wires, all filters & fluids? Especially fuel filter. I'd start there and run a good fuel system cleaner through it.

1986 ford xlt lariatf150 302 in it will run good for a little while but its staring to sputter an spit like its not getting gas. But ihavent changed the fuel filter yet. But you can let it sit for a sec....

There is only one fuel filter and the possibility of bad gas is good.If the truck set as long as you said then you need to drain the fuel tank and put in fresh gas, unleaded gas does not do well over three months old and if it is an ethanol blend it will actually start to grow a fungus.Change the fuel and the fuel filter and if this does not work let me know,we will start over from there.
