1997 Jeep Cherokee stuck in reverse


post 2 times, why?
why not say, this,
my shift lever shows.
PRNDL (this is called and automatic)
drive is dead, low is dead, Reverse works. only.
in drive its reverse,
in low its reverse.
this can be a simple bad ,dead shift cable.
all it takes is looking at end of cable to find this truth, 2 persons, 1 shifts, other LOOKS. bingo.
or not. if not the cable the box is toast.

this is called a manual transmission. a stick.
gear 1,2,3,4,5,fails, but R, reverse is all i get out of my manual trans, (rare is hens teeth but fixed many like it) bad shift rails, or detents.

your owners manual should have the clock setting modes, if no owners manual you can go online and specify your vehicle by year, make, and model and procedures should come up to re-program your clock

Try shifting to 2nd gear and then into reverse to stop gear roll over.

You can try shifting into manual 1 to get moving then once you get going shift the lever up into Drive. This should work, then drive it to a shop to have your ****** looked at.

I have an 1985 Bronco 2 with five speed manual transmission, it grinds when I go to shift into reverse with the clutch all the way in but shifting into 1-OD if fine its just reverse??????


The gears 1 and OD, (and any other EXCEPT reverse) have synchronizers that will reduce grinding, for a while...
Your condition sounds like the clutch is not fully disengauging, OR you may not be waiting long enough before attempting to select reverse... Check the clutch adjustment for full disengaugement....Do not let this continue or you will wear out the synchros in the other gears....

I have a 97 f-250 7.3 with a manual trans. and it wants to jump out of reverse if I dont go to 1st gear and then to rev. first.


Sounds like the shift lever is not coming completely out of 2nd gear. So, by shifting into 1st gear, you recenter the shift lever. You can confirm this by going under the truck and moving the 1st - 2nd lever on the side of the transmission with your hand. If the shifter goes into reverse after you manually recenter the 1-2 lever, then you need to correct the problem that prevents the "normal" recentering of the 1-2 shift lever.

Possibilities are: Bent shift rod; worn shifter; worn shift rod at connection to shift lever on transmission.

I can't shift into reverse. All other 5 gears are


My VW is not shifting into reverse at all; I think a certain person was driving and mistakenly pressed the gear shifter down for all gears--reverse is the only gear you press the shifter down first in. Doesn't grind, 1 2 3 and 4 work but no reverse no reverse lights.
I've read several complicated (can't see scenario's) posts on screens and linkage and a cable fixed one guys problem but still no solutions.

If you are going to just replace the valve body then there is no need to remove the transmission. All other repairs will require removal of the transmission from the vehicle.

No reverse sometimes geo metro a/t


The accelator cable is "Y" shaped. one side goes to the carb and the other to the tranmission. If you have the carb.side too tight it will give you the problem that you are having.
