Hi I have a 2001 Xterra, Manual, 213,000, runs rough at random

Hi I have a 2001 Xterra, Manual trans, 213,000 mile. Runns great.
Lateky at random it starts and immediatly runs very rough. Then the problem stops and reappears later at random.
I had a major tuneup done 3 or 4 months ago change oil regularly. Had a local mechanic shop check. Tehy couldn't find anything.
Any ideas?

If your mechanic changed the spark plugs. Make sure he did a few things.

First make sure he used NGK plugs. I have seen other make plugs cause running conditions.

The other thing is make sure plug number 6 was changed. I can not tell you how many times I have seen shops leave that one cause it's to hard. That also can give you the ruff condition.

Last but not least, if the distributor cap and rotor and wires were not replaced, it may be possible that you could have a spark issue being loss. If you notice it more when conditions are wet, then it has to be related to those items.

Thanks Jay!

You need to replace tranny, is your check engine light on? if so get codes read for free at Auto Zone parts store,,,Lots of miles on vehecle? Trans fluid should be changed at 40 thousand miles. Most folk dont do this and thats why trannys go out,,,and treating the trans bad like getting stuck in snow and driveing rough all cause bad trannys

2001 Xterra, running real rough, has 155k on it. The check engine light is flashing on and off. Still has the factory spark plugs in it. Could this be the problem?

it`s a good idea to get a complete tune-up with 155k. but you can use a scanner to get a code to find the problem.

well, it would be to your advantage to change fluid and tranny filter. before it is to late. change fluid and filter every 45 to 60 thousand miles. for a better working tranny. have a good day !!

For a 2001 nissan xterra when should the timing belt be replaced

On a 3.3L engine V-6, Nissan recommends replacement every 105,000 miles, note that this is an interference engine, that piston to valve damage will happen in the event of a timing belt failure.

Xterra with 2.4L and 4.0L have timing chain only, no timing belt.

Have you changed all the plugs to platinum and wires? My xterra was doing that and I changed all of them and now it runs great. Also, I changed the distribitor cap and rotor button.
