If starter motor runs (hear it??) but doesn't turn engine , then it needs to be replaced also at same time , the gear it contacts with on flywheel edge ,needs to be visually inspected (easy with starter removed) for any missing or bent teeth , as a engine this old is bound to have some worn or missing teeth, if gear is missing teeth or are very worn (teeth looks like a shark fin with hook to them) then engine and transmission will need to be separated to be replace the gear , most shops will just remove engine to allow for this , but this isn't always nessacary

Replace starter

two things can happen
first the starter will spin but don't trow the Bendix (shaft) to engage with the flex plate
second flex plate have worn spot and the starter spin on dead spot
turn the engine with hand little and start again.
if the starter work normal the engine will turn.
if nothing happen the starter is bad

Starter making whining noise

sounds as if your starter isn't engaging, usually due to either the solenoid not operating the bendix or a bendix fault, to prove a point, if the vehicle is a manual, put it in gear, handbrake off and push the car forward ( which will turn the engine into a different possition) then put h/brake on out of gear and try starter again, if it tries to turn over its possiby the starter ring gear, if not it's starter.

sounds like possibly the starter is working but the gear it meshs with (Flywheel) may have missing teeth in it, explaining the whining noise you are hearing from the starter not making gear contact. When you left home all was well but when you went to leave work the flywheel is in a different position and is causing no contact to start the engine. Hope this helps
