Ok thanks for the reply. Here's what I know about the problem. All fuses have been checked and rechecked and all have continuity. A new 7 prong plug has been wired into the back of the truck and wiring verified correct. All functions of the plug work when tested with a test light, except brake light and when I connect the trailer all light functions work execpt brake lights. I was told by a mechanic that I needed to replace the multi- function switch. Can you think of any thing else that could be the problem? Thanks 2rns4u

check your timing chain its probably broken. diesels have no spark plugs and uses compression ignition and uses a lot of battery charge to turn it over. thats why it sounded like it was dead. if the chain brakes the upper and lower cam and crank shafts aren't in time together so you get no compression ignition. sorry for your troubles and hope i helped

suggest downloading the trailer pin standard for whatever number of pins your trailer plug has and tracing the wiring from the colors . The standard will tell you what color goes to what light and what pin number it should be on . Also 5 pin and 7 pin are different . You can plug a 5 pin into a 7 pin but the wiring is different .

Also check the trailer socket is grounded at the car body properly. As this can cause lots of weird symptoms.

1999 dodge ram 2500 turbo diesel the trailer brakes won't work and I tried a different truck to make it was not the trailer any ideas?

We just had the same problem with our 99 2500 Turbo Diesel Ram. The problem ended up being the factory trailer cord recepticle near the hitch. When we unplugged the harness from the back side of the recepticle we found that the brake terminals had gotten hot and burned out. We replaced the recepticle (about $30 from Dodge) and our problem was solved.

I lost the light in the 2003 Duramax a few week ago.I just found a blown fuse under the hood in that big fuse panel by the driver side. It was the 15 amp mini fuse on the upper left hand corner. There was a white arrow pointing to it. Evidently someone has had the problem before. I bet that's my culprit
