Check the earth wire on the car is making a good connection to the Car body. check the trailer socket on the car has a good ground to the car body.
I have had this happen on a trailer and this was the cause as the circuit makes a path through the tail light.
if this is not the cause you may have a short circuit with a live voltage wire in the car and will have to check the wiring .
A 12 volt probe would help trace this and also to check the wiring is correct. Google trailer pin out
to work out if wiring is correct.

Brake lights not working upper works fine

First check the bulbs to make sure that they are not blown, if they check out ok then check the wiring for the tail lights(this includes the trailor light hookup if applicable) if there is no sign of bare wires then you may need to replace the tail lamp circiut boards, you can purchase these at advance auto parts for $29.99. the part number is 70001. all you have to do is take the bulbs out and switch them to the new board and plug it in. good luck

I need to hook up a boat trailor Whats the color code for a 1995

I suspect that the 4 wire harness includes a ground, so you may not be able to connect both brake lights and turn signals, which are separate lamps on the pickup. You may need to get an adapter.

In any case, the color codes on the pickup are:

Tail lights -- pink/blue
Brake Lights -- green/yellow
Left turn signal -- gray/blue
Right turn signal -- gray/red
Ground -- black

Hi, plug in in the back does not work for a hook up on my trailor. all the tail lights on the truck do work. the trailor about half of them work. i do not have tail lights or backup lights and my left...

You probably have corrosion in the socket on your truck. You'll have to take the plug in apart and check it. Or, it could be loose, damaged or broken wires leading to the plug.
