Question about 1999 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

1999 GMC Jimmy won't start. Tried adding little gas into butterfly at air intake. Sounds like trying to fire a little. I took the distributer cap off. Cleaned contacts. Still won't start.

Today vehicle wanted to start more spark. I took and wiped off ignition coil, and took hair drier to it for 5 min. Then car started right up. So there is a crack in it letting moisture into it. Shorting it out. Have to get it replaced. Was real wet and rainy last 3 days. No rain today!

1999 jimmy doesn't have a carb. has fuel injection . From what you have typed here i would suggest you take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop !

Testimonial: "I know that. Last time fuel pump went out, I'd spray a little starting fluid into butterfly intake! Then would start. So since I tried a small amount of gas and did not work. Figure it's something with ignition."

Pull a plug wire off and hold near ground ! Metal on the engine . Crank over the vehicle , is there a good spark ? Constance ?

If so not a ignition problem .

Hook up a fuel pressure gauge .How much fuel pressure is there ? (55-60 psi) The distributor on these have problems with the gear on the end that goes into the engine. strip !

  • Jeff Armer Dec 14, 2016

The fuel injection on these also are troublesome ! Fuel regulators leaks and the trouble with that is the regulator is under the intake manifold !

Took distributer out and changed dist rotor and dist cap. Put ne spark plugs and wires. Now wont start and backfires while trying to start.

You have the Engine Out Of Time you will have to bring number 1 cylinder to Top dead center do this by turning the Crank bolt Clockwise Have the valve cover off so you can watch the Intake and Exhaust Valve`s open and close as number one piston comes up on a firing stroke make sure you have the number one cylinder coming up on a firing stroke. Watch Intake valve open and close as you turn the Crank.when pisten gets dead top of this STROKE DROP THE DISTRIBUTER; Start the Firing Order right where the Rotery Button is inside the Distributer cap

Why won't my truck stay running when I'm not

Try cleaning your throttle body. Over time on high mileage vehicles, the throttle body butterfly valve will gunk up with sludge, and dirt. This will prevent air from entering the intake manifold while the engine is idling, causing low idle/stalling. A can of throttle body/carb cleaner will do the job. First, remove the intake tube to get to the butterfly valve. Spray a small amount of throttle body cleaner directly into the intake, and wipe any excess fluid with a cloth. Also, inspect your air filter. I hope this helps

I have a 99 Jimmy with 4.3 engine. I have bad missing in the engine. I have replaced all wires, plugs, cap and rotor. This unit is still missing and setting a general misfire code. I have no vacuum leaks...

I found the problem and 99 jimmy is running great now. the major problem was the intake manifold gaskets sucking air and causing random misfire codes(bad fuel/air ratio) but also we pulled the distributor as well because from 87-99 the drive gear was made of soft material and sure enough 3 teeth on the dist gear were almost worn right off. We also replaced this with 120$ new rebuilt unit.
Intake gasket kit is approx 100$ and no more than 2 hrs labour and the distributer is real easy to pull and replace once the intakes are off so this is a good time to check dist with little extra labour.

1996 jimmy continually replace distributer cap and rotor

The symptoms sound like you actual distributor is bad. It may have a bad or worn bearing, or possibly a cracked or broken shaft. I would replace the distributor itself.

i think if you checked the sparking plugs and map sensors then check your distributer its maybe not delivering the current nedded to perform the spark to some of the cylinders

99 GMC Sierra 4.8L won't start after changing water pump

good job. There are two sensors you need to be aware in the air intake. the first is the MAF (mass air flow) this reads the amount of air coming, so the engine can adjust the amount of fuel to mix. The other is the IAC (intake air control temperture), which reads the temp of the air coming in the intake to the throttle body.
