Thermostat reset

Sounds like the thermostat is broken or stuck open. If the thermostat is good it is possible the the engine coolant temp sensor is bad.

The thermostat is electrically opened by the computer, there are two coolant temp sensors, one is to the gauge the other is cylinder head temp that the computer reads to know when to open the thermostat, when you place the thermostat in water to test, it won't open enough (fail safe only)

Have a 95 ford ranger 4 cyl need to know where coolant temp switch is located my gauge is inop i found coolant temp sensor for computor need one for the gauge

On the 4 cylinder motor (2.3L,2.5L), the coolant temp sensor can be located
on the left side rear of the engine, below the cylinder head.

A picture of a typical Coolant Temp Sensor (aka ECT) is below:

Be sure to partially drain coolant below the level of the sensor to avoid spillage when removing the old part. Best of luck on your repair!

How do i fix code 51 89 ranger 2.3 std trans

That code is for the coolant temp open circuit. More than likely replacing the coolant temp sensor will correc the issue but check/verify the connector and wiring for the temp sensor before you replace.

1999 ford ranger w/ 2.5l goes into closed loop before engine coolant reaches normal operating temp. What's up with this?

engine getting over heated so it is going in close loop, may coolant is leaking from some where or temp senor is sending wrong reading to ecu, if no leakage is there then replace temp sensor.

2003 Ford Ranger Heat Sensor

if you are referring to the coolant temp sensor and not the coolant temp switch, then yes, this sensor tells the ecm what temp the engine is at and the ecm delivers the correct amount of fuel to the vehicle. The switch in most cases just sends the signal to the guage or light.
