You are losing coolant if you have a coolant pressure tester follow the directions and use it. If you don't when the car is cool use a 50/50 solutuion of water and coolant fill system and check all the listed items carefully with a flash light and look for leaks. It is either a bad hose, cap, water pump or radiator. Your coolant circulates through the dash and the blower blows throught the heater core to produce heat. No coolant no heat. I would also check the passanger side floor for anti freeze or moisture could be a leaking heater core also.

You can put a higher temp thermostat and that should help, but it should at least have 170 degree air right now if it was working right. There are two other things you might check for, the diverter door make some sound when you switch from heat to cool and back, I can't tell you for sure if it is a manual, vacumn or electric but that would definitely cause it to blow cold air. There is also a valve which cuts off circulation to the heater core when your not using it. This valve will be in line with the heater hoses going to your heater core. I have seen some that were actually part of the heater core box. I feel pretty sure one of these will be your problem. Also if your car is low on coolant it would not heat properly. You also could have air in your coolant system. You can't just add coolant on these models after you drain the system or let it run low on coolant. The degas bottles on these models also have a flaw, where they crack along a seam. Sometimes coolant will leak, sometimes not, depending on how high the crack is on the bottle. But what it is guaranteed to do is allow air into your system, which can cause havoc with overheating (air surrounds the thermostat so it doesn't open) and keep coolant from flowing, particularly through the highest point in the system: the heater core. There is a heater core bleeder valve attached to a line near the top of the degas bottle (next to the expension line up top) with a plastic, flathead srewdriver face. Turn the heat on high and run the system at idle for 5 minutes. Then open the valve and keep it open until a steady stream of coolant comes out. (It's like bleeding your brakes.) That will clear any air from the system and at least give you peace of mind that this is not your problem. Then run the motor at 2000 rpms, with the heat still on high, for about 5 minutes or until hot air starts coming out. Release the bleeder valve again until a steady stream comes out. Then let the system cool and check your coolant level and fill as needed. I'd pull the degas bottle and inspect it...should have been a recall.

It could be a vaccum leak for the drivers side blowing cool air and the passenger side blowing warm air
Does it have dual air control switches one for drivers side and one for passengers side?

My 2006 f-150 4.2L 113,000 miles heater blows cool when at Idle ,But when driving the heater blows hot. Change thermostat change water pump change the Rad. change the blend door motor
flush the block bleed the system add new green coolant. After all that still blowing cool air at Idle. What is causing this problem.

Why wont the heater blow out hot air in my 1995 pontiac bonneville. it will only blow cool air


If the heater hoses are getting hot, the problem may be a faulty blend door under the dash. The blend doors direct air thru the heater core and the vents.

Hi James,

First, I guess you realize that the heater is part of your engine cooling system. Then it also has its own parts inside the vehicle that have absolutely nothing to do with the engine cooling system.

The trick to getting your heater working is to first determine which part of the heater system has the problem.
First, you need to verify proper engine cooling system operation. There is more to this than just replacing a thermostat. If you have a problem like a blown head gasket, you r heater will not work. What SHOULD be done is to operate the engine while watching the computer data for the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT). Doing This, you can verify that the engine is warming up to operating temperature. You can also verify that the thermostat is opening at the correct temperature. Then take an infrared thermometer and take a manual reading from the engine near the temperature sensor. The reading you get from the thermometer should be within about 5 degrees of the reading that the computer is getting from the ECT. The engine cooling fans should come on between 220 and 228 Deg. F. When they do come on, the air that is blowing through the radiator should be HOT. If it is not, this is an indication that the radiator is stopped up, the water pump is not pumping correctly, or there is a blown head gasket that is filling your cooling system with combustion gasses. This can be done with just the thermometer, but it is best to also verify the ECT computer data.

If all of this is working properly, then it is time to look INSIDE the car for the problem. The blend-air door in your A/C-heater housing may not be working. When you switch the temperature control inside the car, you should be able to HEAR a change in the air flow. This applies to ALL vehicles, whether they are equipped with cable, vacuum, or electronically controlled blend air doors. If you cannot hear a difference in the sound of the air moving through the A/C-Heater housing, then chances are pretty good that the problem is with your blend-air door. If this seems to be the problem, let me know and I can give you further instructions on how to check this and/or repair the problem.

P.S. Just thought I'd mention that a pretty good infrared thermometer can be purchased at any parts store for around $40.....This is a very good investment because you can use it for many other things and is a lot cheaper than an hour of diagnostic time at most repair shops.

When the car is idling, the heater blows out cool air but when the car is moving, the heater works fine


When the coolant in the heater core is hot from the engine and your fan is on hot air will blow through the hot fan coil, i figured it out, when i stepped on the gas i could here the coolant squeezing by the control or limiter valve, because the higher rpms make the belt spin faster which makes the water pump pump harder causing more pressure, so when u idle that hot coolant will cool down from the fan blowing on it, u need to find the control valve and open it up to full blast, then hot coolant will always be flowing through your heater coil. ;)

Hot air blows but cools down in 15-20 seconds.


You likely have a restriction in the heater coolant hose circuit - perhaps a coolant control valve not fully opening, or a kinked hose.
Insufficient coolant volume is flowing to keep the heater core hot.
Try back flushing the heater core system with a garden hose to check flow.

Sounds like your freon has leaked out and your heater blower resistor is burned out. Deffinitly take this to the dealer.

The heater in your car depends upon a flow of hot coolant going through the heater core in order to get hot air into the car. If the heater core is partially plugged, it will restrict the flow. If you have a head gasket that is putting exhaust into the cooling system, it will eventually get into the heater core. When this happens there is no coolant in the heater core to make the air warm. If the water pump vanes have corroded away the result will be very poor coolant circulation causing the heater to not blow hot air. If your car is equipped with a heater control valve that is not functioning properly, the coolant flow will be restricted. One or a combination of these factors is likely the culprit in your case.

if the car is not overheating, the thermostat is working fine.... replace or flush the heater core multiple times to try and eliminate sediment build-up.
