98 vz800 marauder: loud knocking noise from the engine when accelerating - what it could be from?

Don't think so. The knocking noise seems to come from the the left hand side of the motorbike and from the inside the engine casing and is louder when accelerating.

Knocking is usually a rod knock --from a burnt/spun bearing other is a lighter sounding knock which would be problem with fuel [bad fuel ]

Thanks for trying Nicola. Do you have any other ideas? Would be much appreciated. Just want to get on the right track as the fix will be costly.

For a knocking - rear main bearing knock. Makes a dull knocking or thud noise. Detected at speeds between 20-50 mph.

    Timing gear knock

  • Nicola Conroy Dec 15, 2016

Other noises are piston slap- valve noise - rod bearing knock - wrist pin slap.

Think the first two I said may make sense with type noise you described

It sound like it's from valve / bearing. The noise is very loud/ mechanical at higher revs. Not an easy fix! Cheers.

Loud knocking noise engine

Have a oil pressure test done on the engine to determine bearing failure. Have a compression test done to check for internal damage such as broken rings/pistons or overheated motor.. If the noise appears during acceleration then run the fault codes and look for a tuning problem or failed knock sensors

the knock sensor changes the timing of the motor when it senses knock ,it sounds like the wire may have come off ,it sounds as if when you press the gas the timing should advance and it sounds as if its not advancing thats why you are hearing a clattering noise on accelerating.if you keep driving it like that you can do engine damage

Loud ticking/knocking/rattling sound when I start/accelerate

hi is it miss-firing as it sounds like a knocking noise can be anything but if you can feel it on the accelerater pedal then the noise sounds like its on the inlet valve side which would transfere the noise up the throttle body where the accelerater is located it could be something as simple as a tappet come loose to a burned valve you need to have a look do a compression test and take the rocker cover off see if theres anything come loose yates210456
