2002 chryler cr pt key won.t turn

Make sure the steering wheel is straight, if it is off to one side when you parked, there is tension on lock. Try rocking or pulling the steering wheel while turning the key. It is possible that the tumblers in the lock are bad though

Ignition switch won't release key when it is put in park. But when I removed switch and key tumbler, the key tumbler/cylinder releases key. Why won't the key release when it is in park?

Most newer models have a safety feature called
shift interlock. This prevents the key from being turned back
to the lock position if you forget to place the gear selector in park.
Depending on the model,
If it uses a cable, it may be sticking or needs adjusting.
If it uses an electrical solenoid. may be blown fuse or park switch.
Tap, shake, and pull up on the shifter and make sure it's in park.

Took my ford focus to a dealer because key would not turn either way. They said it was the tumbler and would have to be replaced. They jusy called and said they installed new tumbler and reprogramed the...

The reason that the key wouldn't turn must have come from a malfunction of the ignition switch or the connecting rod, rather than the just the tumbler. Since the dash lights & gauges work now, at least part of the ignition switch is working, but apparently not the part that's engaged when the switch is turned to the "start" position.
By replacing just the tumbler, the dealership tech would have jiggled the connecting rod just enough to reseat it (and fix the jam that was causing the key to fail to turn in the tumbler), but didn't fix the real problem, which seems to be a worn out ignition switch or worn connecting/actuating rod.

Won't start; some electrical problem. If I turn the key 10 to 20 times it will eventually start and run fine. Sometimes it will start on first attempt. Hot or cold........this situation has been...

Remove the lock cylinder, then take a pair of pliers and," do one at a time", pull out the tumblers and rub both sides across fine sand paper to remove corrosion. Take a small finger nail file and file it back and forth through the tumbler slot in the cylinder to remove any obstructions. Use WD 40 to clean everything. Be very careful not to lose the very small springs that push the tumblers back and forth.
Pay attention to the way you remove and replace the tumblers! If you lose a tiny spring, you might be able to get one from a locksmith.
The parts store wanted $110.00 for a cylinder for my 1999 Chrysler and all it needed was the
above treatment and it works fine.
My problem was the same as yours and I'm sure this will fix it.
