Where is the vapor canister purge valve located on a 96 Cadillac deville Northstar

If your purge valve/solenoid is failing, chances are you will need a new EVAP Carbon Canister as well. As the canister gets old the charcoal (carbon) starts to break down and bits gets sucked and stuck in the valve when the gases are purged from the canister on start up and acceleration. If you take the solenoid off and tap it on the ground you will probably see tiny bits of carbon fall out. This is a sure sign that you need a new canister ...Just replacing the solenoid valve won't help as it will only get clogged again by these bits of carbon. GM located most canisters in the rear wheel well under the wheel well lining. Not too sure of your model but check a Manuel. You must also blow out the line before connecting it to the new canister as bits of carbon can be still in the line and contaminate the new purge valve.

97 Mercury cougar xr7 v6. po443, po430, po171, po174,

Sounds like you have low fuel supply or a leak in intake system causing lean codes, check fuek pressure and volume first. Cat converter effeciancy could be caused by the lean codes, purge system sounds like solenoid failure, check for high resistance accross purge vent solenoid.

Check Engine Light

Ok i have the same make and model car.And had same problem but i was only needing new hoses. thwe code reader will not tell you if they are bad you just have to check this. The purge valve and canister is located under hood on passenger side behind bumper. look behind the light through the openings. You have to raise car up and do the repairs from under the bottom of the bumper. On passenger side under hood above the wheel fender and between the engine you will see a emmision line about the size of a pencil leads to the purge valve. the valve cost about $18.00 and canister cost around $75.00 at auto zone. The canister is the square box and sometimes you can take apart and clean it and put back together and it should work fine.
