Question about 1994 Volvo 940

2 Answers

My 94' 940 volvo AC is not cooling. The fan turns on, no leak, great coolant pressure. When car sits and runs, the ac cooling pipe next to the condensor is ice cold. After driving it for 15 min, its warm and blows regular air, not cold air. Any help please?

the condensor does not ice over, its just super cold. I checked the condensor with a psi guage and the pressure is fine. It is not over charged. Any other ideas? I did check the relay switch and its fine too.

If the line to the condenser ices back at that point, the system either has too much freon in it or not enough. its 134a refrigerant. if you add freon when its really hot outside, the pressures will be a little higher than normal. do not overcharge the system, since freon really doesn't go bad, it can get contaminated with moisture, and degrade the system. you need to have it dumped out and pulled into a vaccuum and see if it holds 30 inches of vaccuum. vaccuum boils out moisture in the system. check the drier/accumulator at the same time. if it has a sightglass on it , it will change color if there is moisture in the system.

Why is My 04 PT Criuser running hot and there is coolant in the radiator ?

check your cooling fans make sure they are working, to do this start your engine and turn on the ac the cooling fans should be running, if it does the next thing to check is the temp sensors, to do this turn off the ac, while the engine is running keep an eye on your temp gauge if the dial is going up above normal or at the point where you say the engine is running hot check if the cooling fans are running,
1) if not running, cooling fan sensor is not working, replace
2)if running, thermostat is shut, the thermostat regulates the flow of coolant in the engine it is fully open at normal operating temp and close if coolant is cold, replace

Engine cooling fan only works when ac or defrost is on

if engine at long stand still, the engine temperature will rise about 190 degrees the cooling fan suppose to automaticaly turn on when coolant temperature sensor get hot it cause its resistance decrease causing pcm to send power to coolant fan relays and cooling fans, when you turn on AC the cooling fans suppose to turn on to cool down AC CONDENSOR, IF NOT AC WONT WORK COOLING FAN COOLS DOWN REFRIGERANT SO IT CAN RECYCLE THROUGH THE SYSTEM AGAIN.your cooling is suppose to turn on when engine at a sit still if vechicle not moving as coolant temperature rises at a set point the cooling fans will turn on cool down engine.cooling fans dont turn on when you first cold stsrt vechicle unless you have AC SWITCH ON.if cooling fans dont turn on when vechicle at a long stand still or moving along slow traffic.if coolant temperature sensor been replaced and fuses and relays okay have dealership check see if pcm driver circuit working faulty pcm will cause cooling fans not to turn on.

Location of ac high pressure cutout switch on a 97 Plymouth voyager. Could it be a different problem? Had to replaced the PCM and a couple sensors because of a short in the wiring cluster. Now the ac...

HIGH PRESSURE CUTOFF SWITCH LOCATED ON AC COMPRESSOR DISCHARGE LINE LEADING TO THE CONDENSOR.THE HIGH PRESSURE CUTOFF SWITCH WILL CUT OFF THE AC COMPRESSOR IF SYSTEM PRESSURE RISES TO HIGH CAUSED BY RESTRICTION IN THE REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT OR OVERHEATED CONDENSOR.MAKE SURE COOLING FAN IS RUNNING WHEN THE AC SWITCH IS ON.THE COOLING FAN KEEP CONDENSOR COOL, IF COOLING FAN DONT RUN.YOUR AC WILL STOP BLOWING COLD AIR.HAVE THE REFRIGERANT SYSTEM CHECK OUT.MAKE SURE YOUR LOW SIDE PRESSURE IS 10 - 37 PSI. THE HIGH SIDE PRESSURE SHOULD BE 112 - 210 PSI. CHECK THE AC COMPRESSOR CLUTCH FUSE AND RELAY.

Ac cools for about 5 min has right level of freon took it to mechanic said it has head pressure of 450 sets off the pressure relief valve

WHEN HIGH PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE OPENS YOU HAVE TOO MUCH REFRIGERANT IN THE AC SYSTEM OR OVERHEATED CONDENSOR,THE COOLANT FANS NOT WORKING,COULD HAVE BAD COOLING FAN RELAY OR BLOWED FUSE.THE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAULTY NOT TURNING ON THE COOLING FANS TO COOL ENGINE CONDENSOR OR RADIATOR COOLANT.

My 2003 mazda mpv runs hot when the ac is on

Should be 2 radiator fans that come on when AC is turned on,check coolant fan switch or relay, check fans themselves to see if come on and turning fast enough to cool radiator fins. Is it sitting still or when driving running hot? get back with me.

When i drive my car and put the ac on it overheats

Check you water level in the radiator and expansion tank. Make sure you have water first because using the A/C puts a lot of stress on the engine, higher RPMs will make it run hotter. Make sure the fans are coming on. Does it overheat if it just sits there with the A/C running, or without it running?

Coolant is leaking when air conditioner is on.

Are you sure that it is coolant? The AC system evaporator/core does condensate and it is drained off from the core plenum through a tube that runs out under the passenger side of the fire wall and it can very much resemble a coolant leak (except that it is clear water from condensation and not coolant) and that is a normal condition.

However if it is actually coolant leaking it should not be intermittent and only leak when the AC is operating, and if it does have a coolant leak it should leak any time that the cooling system is pressurized.

Have you actually confirmed that there is a coolant leak and it is not just water from condensation, let me know if the fluid is actually coolant and the only thing that it would most likely be is a faulty radiator cap that is not holding pressure, and when the AC is operating it will cause the cooling system to work harder to cool the engine, and the radiator cap might not be able to handle the extra few pounds of pressure put on it by the AC system.

Cooling fans will only turn on if engine is off only

Electric cooling fans do not run all the time. They will only come on if the engine exceeds normal operating temp. Also will run when AC is on. Easiest way to make sure they are operating properly is to first verify they run when the AC is on. Next turn the AC off and run the engine at 2500 rpms sitting still and monitor the temp gauge (don't let it get into the red). The fans should come on after 10-20 minutes (depending on outside temp.). As the engine cools down they will turn off.

This does not seem logical as the AC compressor is run off of a belt attached to the engine. If you hear the fan spinning and can hear the relay click when the AC is turned on, it is engaging properly. If you run the AC full blast for about 10-15 minutes and look under the hood you should be able to find the lines for the AC and see some condensation on one portion and feel heat coming off the other portion. The AC line should be a relatively thin silver colored pipe with 2 fittings on top, one high pressure and one low pressure. Assuming everything is running as it should, and the AC is simply not cold (which is the most common problem), you can buy an AC recharge kit at your local auto parts store. Depending on the year of the car, you may need to bleed the system of the old refrigerant as they changed the standard freon used in recent years. The only moving parts in the system are the fan and compressor, so if there is a drop in speed, it will be one of these components.
