coolant is getting into the engines combustion chamber it sounds like to me. a cooling system pressure test will confirm that but almost certainly you have a bad head gasket or cracked head

Ford focus tdci white smoke problems

What happening is you have a bad head gasket or its starting to go bad. As long a little oil is getting in to cylinders causing that smoke once it warms up that gasket is expanding thus the smoke stops. I would keep an eye on oil levels if it gets milky replace gasket asap. Could also be intake gasket but highly doubt it this sounds like a worn head gasket.

How much on average is the cost of a head gasket replacement? I am thinking of buying a stratus with this need.

At a shop, at least $500 for an inline 4 cyl, no less than $800 for a V6. Also, you may find that the head(s) is cracked, increasing the cost even more. I would not recommend that you pay or sign anything until you have had it looked at by a mechanic.

How do i tell if i have blown head gasket

The signs for a blown head gasket are:
1 - The car oveheats above 195F.
2 - The cooling system is loosing coolant, low coolant level.
3 - The coolant start boiling and owerfloing from the coolant bootle.
4 - Mixture of coolant in oil, or oil in coolant.
5 - White smoke from the tail pipe.
The diagnoses to reveal a blown gasket are.
1 - Radiator compression test. Can be done at any car reapair shop for $30.
2 - Static cylinder compression test. Can reveal at which cylinder is the blown gasket (pression low, or zero). This is very important at V6 or V8 engines.

After driving my 2001 dodge stratus it draws coolant out of the reserve tank and I smell coolant. I have changed the thermostat and hoses so far. What is up?

Do you see white smoke from the exhaust? If so you may have a blown head gasket especially if this engine has overheated. Check the oil level and if it is overfull and looks like a cup of coffee with creme in it, you have coolant in the oil. Remove the oil cap, and if you see a foamy broth under the cap that is another sign of an internal coolant leak. If you see none of this then you have a leak somewhere. Fill the reservoir and radiator with coolant. Park the car over a clean driveway. Start the engine and then let it sit and run until you see where the leak is coming from.

1988 88 v6 delta oldsmobile car idles rough and heats up when in use but seems to be holding fluid and has oil but no heat just cold air and lots of smoke when is initially started

Lots of white smoke is a sure sign of a head gasket problem. Thats actually steam you are seeing. Coolant is getting into one or two of the cylinders overnight, when you start th car in the morning, the heat of combustion steam that coolant and it comes out the tailpipe. The only solution is to pull the heads. Be sure to have the heads checked for cracks. Hope this helps.

Vilvo s40 serviced in june; engine oil warning

most definitely the cylinder head gasket is gone.the oil does not just disappear,it finds its way to the radiator,i.e. mixes with the water.unplug the rediator cap with care(when the engine is cold)and u will see some kind of sludge, creamy colour, which confirms that the cylinder head gasket is burnt.u need an engineer to do the job for u.

Smoke and oil smell at start up sometimes

I have a 1989 chevy silverado. my dad bought it new and never drove it. he wanted to pay it off first. after 5 years it had 15K miles on it. it then smoked everytime he cranked it after it had sit a while. The lack of driving it caused the rubber valve seals to dry rot. so now when it sits, oil seeps down between the valve and the seal and enters the piston chamber. when he cranks it, a poof of blue smoke blows out the exhaust but quickly disappears after the the initial poof of smoke.
this may be your problem also if you have abnormally low milage on the vehicle
